Eh, I thought this episode was kind of blah. I liked some details, especially the teddy bear with the existentialist crisis (LOLOLOL) and the fact that Sam actually asked Dean about Hell like Uriel told him to, but overall, it fell flat. Because:

- The pacing. It felt like the episode sort of wandered from incident to incident without a strong backbone connecting everything; it's hard to specify why, but the pieces were loose and disconnected, unevenly tied up at the end. I never felt like I had to know what was coming next, or even that much was at stake. Which brings me to:

- Lack of consequences. Weird things were happening as a result of the wishes, but bad things? A teddy bear came to life, a kid got superpowers and turned on his bullies, someone won the lottery; Wes wishing that Hope would love him more than anything was creepy as all get out, but that was hardly dealt with in the show - she just forgot everything and wandered away, instead of having to remember and deal with the incredible violation. Supernatural isn't afraid of going to incredibly dark places, and I'm not sure why they didn't here. The wishes go horribly bad, you say? Then why not have the teddy bear, unable to kill himself, start killing others, or have the invisible boy unable to become visible again, or have the superpowered kid actually physically harming people instead of scaring them, etc etc etc. The potential to really show the negative impact of these wishes was always there, but it was never seized, and it made this ep feel hollow and lacking to me.

- Dean remembering all of his experiences in Hell. That came out of left field. It's been hinted that he remembers something from hell - his nightmares, the flashbacks to eyes and screaming, the mask last week - but if they've intended to convey that he has Hell in perfect recall, then they've been doing it wrong. I admit, I'm disappointed. I'd gotten the impression that he'd witnessed or done something important in Hell, and had been repressing it, and eventually was going to remember, and then the shit would hit the fan, and I was looking forward to that. Now that we know he's been lying about not remembering for a while, without the viewer being let on it, and with the details fuzzed (does he really remember everything? Has he always? If so, does he remember Castiel coming for him? He can't, because he had no idea how he got out in Lazarus Rising, so then when did he start remembering? WHY WEREN'T WE PRIVY TO THAT, DAMMIT?), and frankly, I feel a little cheated!

This wasn't a bad episode, but it's the first episode this season that I've had serious problems with.

It was generally a filler one in terms of lacking the essential plot of the season, which eh every show has at least one a season or something. They did spend extra long on certain scenes that they didn't need to, and it didn't feel like their other hunting adventures since the big bad wasn't really a big bad. I mean it was enjoyable and I had some great laughs, but I'm ready for more of teh big plots plz.

Though I'm wondering about Castiel, how come they don't have him experiencing all the insane shit the boys are going through in these kinds of episodes? Can you just imagine the hilarity with him and the suicidal teddy bear? Srsly.

It's been hinted that he remembers something from hell - his nightmares, the flashbacks to eyes and screaming, the mask last week - but if they've intended to convey that he has Hell in perfect recall, then they've been doing it wrong.

That was something I was a bit taken aback too, how they presented it in the fashion of Dean remembering Hell, as we all knew he would, for it to be that he remembers everything from the very beginning. I do think they should've had it that he remembers bits and pieces here and there, and that him being saved it would take a while before those memories started coming back. But yeah, it's like what you stated before that him to have recalled everything that happened in the Pit meant that Dean wouldn't be Dean anymore, which he clearly is. Just more damaged than he normally is. I don't know if it's meant to say that he remembers most of his experience or that he truly remembers all of it, if four months is really forty years in Hell. If so he couldn't possibly remember everything during that time. My thoughts about him telling Sam is that he started to remember when he came back but decided to not tell him or Bobby, and as time went by he started remembering more and more and with all that pain and agony, the screaming and blood, he probably is thinking that it's enough for him to realize that's all his time downstairs. Since you'd think out of everthing he's seen and experienced, tormented and tortured with Lord knows what, he would be driven insane by all that.

Honestly, this season has been kickass so far, even with his remembrance of Hell in this manner wouldn't necessarily ruin things. I still would've liked it to have been panned out the way I thought it would end up. But perhaps there's a reason for it to go in this direction. Dean still has this secret he's carrying around with him, and whatever that secret is I want to know whether it's Hell-related or something else.

I didn't have a problem with that - not every episode can be an OMGLUCIFER episode, and I'm fine with that, just as long as I feel the plot was advanced somewhat (and it was, in this one; we got the revelation about Dean remembering hell). It was the structure of the episode itself, and the missed opportunities therein, that bothered me.

Can you just imagine the hilarity with him and the suicidal teddy bear? Srsly.

LAWLZ!! XD I missed Cas because I'm so his fangirl, and like you said, his reactions to this kind of shit would be hilarious; I could watch a whole episode about Castiel's reactions as he followed the boys around as they went about their cracktastic work. Still, though, Castiel is but a secondary character in the SPN verse, and the fact that they use him only when he is needed makes his appearances all the more powerful and exciting. If they had him show up indiscriminately, it might begin to get taxing, as one of the worst things that can happen to characters is irrelevance. Compare to Heroes S2; neither Sylar nor Peter had any reason to appear in the show before mid-volume, and yet they were included anyway, and boy, were people bored with those storylines! Also compare Buffy S4, in which Spike was a regular and was in almost every episode even though there was no point and he had no plot of his own, and it was awful. (They may have assassinated his character in S5, but at least he had a purpose.) It wouldn't be that bad with Castiel, of course, because he's so relevant to this season, but I do appreciate that whenever he's around, it's because it's important that he be there. As much pleasure as I would derive from Castiel showing up every other episode, in the long run, it would probably be detrimental. (However, I shall insist that he should have been one of Dean's hallucinations in Yellow Fever. I shall also insist that much fanfic be written about Castiel watching the boys' weirder cases.)

My thoughts about him telling Sam is that he started to remember when he came back but decided to not tell him or Bobby, and as time went by he started remembering more and more and with all that pain and agony, the screaming and blood, he probably is thinking that it's enough for him to realize that's all his time downstairs.

I like your fanwank and accept it into my personal canon. It makes me feel better. I just wish that had been more clearly expressed in canon. I would have really loved it if the episode had been about Dean slowly piecing together memories of his time in Hell; like, if Sam's questions about Uriel's comment spurred Dean into attempting to recall what had happened in Hell that was so important, as the episode progressed he kept getting flashes of detail, until he finally realized what Uriel and his subconscious (in the form of Lilith) had been talking about, though it was still hidden from us. That would have been cool, and provided a stronger thread of connection between the disassembled puzzle pieces of plot.

Honestly, this season has been kickass so far, even with his remembrance of Hell in this manner wouldn't necessarily ruin things.

I love this season so much that I can excuse this, but it's still pretty disappointing and isn't a minor slip-up, considering the importance of this plotline. Like, it's not awful... but a few simple adjustments could have made it really awesome, or at least satisfying.

*nods* Agreed, as well. I fangirl over Castiel so much that while I say I want him in all the episodes I prefer him staying in the limited ones where he has relevence to the major plot instead of unnecessary scenes where there is little to no connection whatsoever. Seeing your examples, which I also agree with (I mean, gotta love Sylar but having him or the twins for that matter in those episodes for S2 were majorly pointless), it makes me glad they are overdoing Castiel's run on the show thus far. I mean, as much as I love seeing his prettiness on the screen, I like seeing the intensity of the character rather than him just "being there". It makes me thankful that Kripke and Co. are using Misha's screentime carefully and smartly, and thus making us fangirls wanting more. ;)

Yes, I demand fanfic for those as well. Castiel being involved or at least observing those crazy antics the boys get into, it would be a laugh riot. Fo'srs.

Yeah, sad they didn't execute it in that way but hey, that's what I love about fanwanking. Because we don't really know how much Dean remembered or when he started to, he just now said he remembers everything. So I'd like to think my little theory would be a plausible thing to have happened in between.

LOL THE TEDDY WAS SO CUTE. i felt so sorry for it :( and the super!kid was just awesome!

shall i tell ya who i didnt feel sorry for? the dude who wished for that woman to love him more than anything. in fact, it kinda made me nauseous and i felt no sympathy for him at the end even if they played that sort of music that tried to MAKE you feel bad for him. i only felt for her being violated so horribly.

oh dean, i wanna hug him too! he can have a group hug :)

im slowly becoming a bigger sam fan than dean fan... i never thought this would happen...

ITA. The guy that wished for this girl that never noticed him to love him and only him was damn selfish, and kinda creepy. It's like, I get the implications of the nerdy guy getting that wish but, he didn't even see anything wrong with it even though he was uncomfortable with how she devoted all her time to him and not herself or other things. I was disappointed that she didn't slap him after everything was reversed. Or a disgusted face even! Like, there should've been some consequences for his actions instead of her not knowing who he was since he did violate her freewill into his own selfish wish.
