Biggest lolfail ever.
I want to thank nicole_anell for pointing this out, which I wouldn't have bothered to look for it myself because I don't particularly care, but this is just too ridiculous to not comment on. Dirk Benedict, who played Starbuck in the original BSG, is known for being butthurt and a misogynist when it came to the new re-imagined series where the character of Starbuck is being played by a woman. He loves complaining about it whenever he can. Which you know, whatever, he's free to think whatever he wants to. That was back when the series was just starting, I believe.

Well, apparently he's still very butthurt and misogynist about it. But that's not all he comments on, this is what he says about the new BSG in general:
“They took a family show about morals, spirituality, love and hope and turned it into dysfunction, despair and disenchantment.

“They took a show that was black and white and made it grey. They got rid of all the charm and humour, and made it a dark, nihilistic, depressing experience.”
HE THINKS THIS IS A BAD THING YOU GUYS! ROFL! HE THINKS TELEVISION THAT HAS DEEP AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING MESSAGES, THAT CHALLENGES YOUR MIND, MAKES YOU QUESTION SITUATIONS AND THAT HAS MORALLY GRAY CHARACTERS AND OUTCOMES ARE HORRIBLE AND TERRIBLE. REALISTIC SCIENCE FICTION IS JUST WRONG, OKAY? WRONG. HUMANS ARE ALWAYS GOOD, CYLONS ARE ALWAYS BAD, AND GAIUS BALTAR SHOULD HAVE STAYED EVIL. AND HAVING AN ACTUAL PLOT THAT ADDS SOME DEPTH? THAT'S JUST BLASPHEMY! LOL OMG

This is just some hysterical shit. It's because of this that I cannot take Dirk seriously with anything he says ever because it's obvious he's still living in his own delusional world, probably has hardly watched any of the new series at all based on those comments alone. LOL CRY MOAR DIRK, PLZ. CONTINUE TO ENTERTAIN US WITH YOUR FAIL.

You see, Dirk? That's why the fans ~looooove Richard Hatch, and not you.

Seriously. Richard Hatch > Dirk any day of the week, for real.
Cookie Simone: Bitch PLZ!cookie_simone on May 28th, 2010 07:21 pm (UTC)
Yes. Damn that show! Where the fuck does it get off making genocide seem depressing?! It totally sounds like the premise of a fun family show to me!

IKR? HOW DARE THEY CREATE SOMETHING COMPELLING THAT IS RELEVANT TO OUR REALITY! WAR, GENOCIDE, TERRORISM, RELIGIOUS WARS? WHY, ALL OF THOSE THINGS WERE GOOD HAPPY TIMES BACK IN THE DAY!

Well, with Avatar: The Last Airbender, the creators were able to make it into a family show even though the title character's nation was wiped out. Then again, the show's demographic aimed to younger people that BSG did! XD

HE THINKS THIS IS A BAD THING YOU GUYS!
I know, I can't get over that! My reaction to "They took a show that was black and white and made it grey" is that IT SOUNDS AWESOME. And acknowledging the despair and depression that would follow a real apocalypse? Sign me up!

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: WHERE THERE ARE ONLY PURE HEROES, EVIL VILLAINS, AND CASINO SHIPS.

Did you ever see that horrible article he wrote when the show first started? I'm still not over "lingerie models who f*ck you to death."
Renée: Cylons. By your command!rogueslayer452 on May 28th, 2010 08:04 pm (UTC)
I know! That was my reaction too! I'm like, getting away from awful cheesy 70s scifi and into realistic post-apocalyptic plots and storylines where they actually explore the complications of war? I AM SO THERE! Of course, how it's phrased you would think it would be some kind of parody or making fun of it, but since Dirk is being absolutely serious I don't know whether that's just sad or even more hysterical. lol

I think I recall that, or something similar to that. His views haven't really changed since then so, heh. But he really doesn't pay attention to anything other than his own delusions, does he?
noybusiness: AndersGrievingnoybusiness on May 28th, 2010 09:17 pm (UTC)
Clearly the second episode should have been on the casino planet.
Renée: Six. Warrior of God.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 03:36 am (UTC)
lol, clearly. What, searching for water that's scarce? That's an absurd notion. THERE HAS TO BE A CASINO PLANET! THAT IS MORE REALISTIC!
skieswideopen: BSG: Karaskieswideopen on May 28th, 2010 09:45 pm (UTC)
One can't help but feel a little sorry for the guy. Apparently the last few decades have just passed him by completely.

Seriously, though--what is he thinking by actually saying these things?
Renée: Six. It's good to be a Cylon.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 03:35 am (UTC)
He's just stuck in his own imaginary world, or stuck in the past thinking that 70s cheese is going to be around forever. *shakes head*

He probably thinks he's justified because there are still some old fans of the original that think and feel the same way, but you know what? I say just let them think that. Let them live in their own delusions and be stubborn that way.

I gotta wonder what Richard Hatch thinks about Dirk's comments...
a child dizzy on lemonade: :pfalsebeginnings on May 28th, 2010 09:49 pm (UTC)
Gotta admit I totally read and thought that maybe he was being sarcastic because well...the dark and depressing tone of the show and the grey characters is what made the show so popular and critically acclaimed. Did he want a BSG sitcom or something?
Renée: Cara. Bitch plz.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 03:31 am (UTC)
I would have thought he was being sarcastic too had I not known before that he was so against the newer version and hated that they turned Starbuck into a girl, because really everything he's saying would be helping the fact that the new BSG got it's praise in the first place. But nope. He just wants to live in his own BSG world where it's all about him, really. Because he doesn't seem to be talking about other characters, especially Boomer who was also originally a guy who they turned into not just a woman but a Cylon. Just about his role and what the show turned into.

So butthurt, misogynist and self-centered. Nice going, Dirk.
meandering: BSG - pilotseffervescent on May 29th, 2010 04:50 am (UTC)
I think that might be a reflection of his age, actually, or the era he was working in - though he sounds more like my grandparents, to be honest. But there's definitely a group of people who think that TV shouldn't be dark and depressing, but cheerful and just charming and fun to watch - 'good clean entertainment', that sort of thing. It's kind of like a relic of a time gone by, in a way.

But yeah, the rest of what he said? About how Starbuck just ~should have been a MAN~ and all that crap? Ugh.
Renée: Six. It's good to be a Cylon.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 07:36 pm (UTC)
Perhaps, but I think it's very interesting how he says that the original had "morals, spirituality, love and hope" when the newer version had the same frakking thing, just in the midst of all the serious and darker moments. I mean, I do understand that some people just don't see the appeal of the newer updated version, much like how those such as myself don't see the appeal of the older versions. But his claims are just ridiculous as it shows that he hasn't even watched an episode or tried to understand it, as I've read former fans of the original had the same reaction until they saw the miniseries and they calmed down from it. So, heh.

lol, I also find it hilarious how he continues to talk about Starbuck being turned into a woman. No mentioning of Boomer being turned into a woman (or a Cylon, for that matter).

Maybe he thinks the new BSG lacks a laugh track?
Renée: BSG. ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 07:32 pm (UTC)
Can you imagine? FOR EVERY MENTION OF GENOCIDE, LAUGH TRACK! FOR EVERY TIME SOMEONE DIES UNEXPECTEDLY, LAUGH TRACK! EVERYTHING IS MUCH BETTER WHEN THERE'S A LAUGH TRACK INVOLVED, EVEN WHEN THERE'S ATTEMPTED RAPE AND TORTURE HAPPENING ON THE SCREEN!
srs bsns: bsg bohemian rhapsodyibroketuesday on May 29th, 2010 03:45 pm (UTC)
Oh, this dickwad. He's pissed that this new BSG, with its GIRLS and its STORYTELLING, is a wild success, whereas his is generally regarded as campy. lol butthurt.
Renée: Six. It's good to be a Cylon.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 07:30 pm (UTC)
For reals. I mean, the original might have been great for that particular era, but this is the 21st century dude. People don't want cheesy scifi anymore, they need something riveting and with compelling storytelling and characters and GRAY AREAS instead of things like PLANET CASINOS THAT MAKE NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

So, Dirk? While we bask in the delicious excellence of this newer, and more awesomer BSG please, continue being butthurt and whining like a little bitch. We love to see you fail again and again with these comments.

Yep, and it was a home for insectoid creatures who were allies with the Cylons, apparently why yes I did just read all about the lulz the original bsg had

Wow, butthurt asshat is a butthurt asshat. I would've liked a bit more humor injected in the series, but to go and make it black and white would've made it sooooooo boring.
Renée: Cara. Bitch plz.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 07:20 pm (UTC)
I bit more lighthearted moments would have leveled out the angst for sure, but I loved the show as it was because it's just so damn epic. And yeah, making it all black and white with no gray would just have been plain wrong esp with what they were dealing with. Because life? It ain't all black and white.
bold_seer: karabold_seer on May 29th, 2010 05:41 pm (UTC)
How dare they have made him, a man, into a - girl? *shudders* And a campy show into something that can be, and is, taken seriously? The nerve!

LEAVE THAT COAT ALONE; IT IS FAR, FAR TOO GOOD FOR YOU! *is insulted on behalf of the coat in the picture* Actually, that role is far too good for him. How dare he be an insult to the original series of Columbo; how flattering is that?

Loved the comment there, though.
Renée: BSG. ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER.rogueslayer452 on May 29th, 2010 07:15 pm (UTC)
I know, right? The nerve of them taking something so ridiculously campy and recreate it to actually have intriguing plots and character developments!

SRSLY! HE DOES NOT DESERVE TO WEAR SUCH A COAT. TRENCHES ARE RESERVED FOR ONLY THOSE WORTHY OF IT, AND YOU SIR ARE NOT WORTHY OF SUCH FINE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING. AND HIM BECOMING COLUMBO? DEFINITELY A DOWNGRADE AND AN INSULT. THERE'S A RULE DUDE, NO DOUCHEBAGS PORTRAYING CLASSIC LOVABLE CHARACTERS. GOOD DAY.

(lol, I totally didn't notice the comment there - at least everyone knows how butthurt and whining Dirk is)
