Day 23: "Oy vey..."
Day 23 - Most annoying character

There are plenty of characters that I find annoying in almost all my fandoms, so it really depends. There are certain characters that are annoying mostly due to how a particular actor portrays them, or how they're written, sometimes even both. Sometimes it's not even a character I dislike, it can just be the direction the writers chose for a season or storyline or whatever. And honestly, it would take forever to really list the names of characters that I found the most annoying in all these fandoms that I have, so I'll just leave it at this because it could turn into a huge ranting post if I did. Besides, if you know me and are familiar with my opinions on certain fandoms, I'm sure y'all know which characters I find irritating and annoying, so I really don't need to get into that today. *g*

Masterlist of days here.

Okay, everyone knows that I don't do spoilers unless my curiosity gets the better of me and I seek them out myself. Well, there's been one particular spoiler that I couldn't avoid.

From SFX issue #198: "There's also been talk in the writers' room about how to bring The Trickster (Archangel Gabriel) back."
THEY'RE THINKING ABOUT BRINGING MY BB GABRIEL BACK! :D :D :D

Lord have mercy, I just about cried right when I read this. Seriously, if there was any character death on Supernatural I was the most upset about it was Gabriel's, for sure. I mean, I guess they read about how outraged most of fandom was based on the petition of saving Gabriel was put up the moment after that episode aired, and now they're in the works of actually fulfilling it. Which I'm very sure it was fandom's influence because our voices do count in certain ways.

I just hope if and when this occurs they better fucking use his character with everything they've got, because just to bring him back for a flimsy little thing is not gonna cut it. Gabriel is a fantastic character portrayed by a very talented actor, and this better not be one of those "bring them back only to use them minimally and then kill them off (again)" spiel that this show is very famous for doing now. THEY HAVE ALREADY FUCKED WITH MY EMOTIONS ENOUGH WITH FAKING OUT HIS DEATH AND THEN DOING IT FOR REAL, AND NOW THIS NEWS. IT BETTER BE FOR PERMANENT OR ELSE I AM CUTTING SOME BITCHES. Either way though, I know that Richard Speight Jr. will be absolutely thrilled once learning they're planning on this, because he's been just a sweetheart. Only four episodes of the whole series, but his gratefulness towards the fans have been so overwhelming that I'm sure he'll be just as overjoyed as we are when they finalize this.

My theories on bringing Gabriel back is quite simple: God brings Gabriel back because he was faithful to the cause. I mean, come on. Castiel was resurrected twice now and mostly it was in protection of the Winchesters. Gabriel did the same thing, coming through in the end, even if it was a suicide mission, but he put others first before himself and faced up to Lucifer. He deserves at least a reward for that, it just makes perfect sense. And my wish is that Gabriel and Castiel have more screentime together, brotherly bonding, perhaps traveling alongside the Winchesters. Or even their own little mission! Wishful thinking I know, because since when does the show focus on any other character, supporting or otherwise, that isn't the Winchester brothers? But you never know.

I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but dammit this is GABRIEL! And I love Richard and this just, yeah. It makes me happy.

Other than that, I've been rewatching the first season Dark Angel, because it's been forever since I've watched it and I suddenly had an itching to view it again. I think it's interesting how many people now have started watching it from the second season rather than the first all because of Jensen Ackles. Which yeah, he was great in it, but I prefer the first season much better since I think it flowed more smoothly, mythology-wise. The second season introduced many new elements that were hardly finished, and it leaves me wondering had they not been canceled would those mysteries be resolved? I think the first season was simple enough that it had a mythology element that wasn't too complicated, but it was just right to keep you intrigued in what was going on. Also, as a personal observation, Jessica Alba seemed happier and healthier during the first season.

That's just my own take on it, anyway. Love the show as a whole, but the first season really remains my favorite due to that.

I WAS LITERALLY GOING FOR A VERY LOUD "OH MY FUCKING GOD SO FUCKING AWESOME" BUT THEN I REMEMBERED THAT IT'S 2:21 IN THE MORNING AND EVERYONE'S ALREADY ASLEEP.

and then i wanted to run to my sister's room to tell her the ~great news~ but SHE'S ALSO ASLEEP WHAT THE FUCK YOU DO NOT SLEEP AT AN AWESOME TIME LIKE THIS. but i will seriously get all pissed off and smite-y if they decide not to do it. PETITIONS, PEOPLE! PETITIONS THAT WE CAN SEND TO THE WRITERS SO THEY'LL SEE HOW MUCH WE LOVE THIS GUY!

aaaaand dark angel, oh god. i rewatched the first season and the first half of season two before christmas last year, but somehow i never continued with it. i really, really should, though, because i think i'm only a few episodes short of the berrisford agenda, which is totes up there as one my favourites ever. ♥ but it's just such an awesome show. jessica alba can kick some serious ass, and her girl power's almost as awesome as eliza dushku's. besiders, her sass coupled with alec's is just pure gold, no lie. :D

I NEARLY CRIED WITH JOY, OKAY? LIKE SERIOUSLY. I AM NOW COMPLETELY OVERJOYED BY THIS NEWS. EVEN IF IT'S NOT DEFINITE YET IT'S SOMETHING TO SAY THAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IT. NOW THIS TALK? MUST BE PUT INTO ACTION BECAUSE WE WANTS OUR BB GABRIEL BACK! :D

I really love Dark Angel (hence why it's part of my username, lol) and I got into it initially because I love anything with girls kicking ass, and yes. Jessica Alba had that ass-kicking and sassy quality in this show for sure. Oh yes, she definitely has that Eliza quality to her attitude on this show, for real. It makes me wish the show had continued that kind of streak instead of being canceled. I wanted to see more, dammit. But oh well.

I loved Dark Angel! S1 was good though and so was S2 but it was set up in such a way that it needed another season. I was disappointed that it was canceled.

With all the new information they introduced it really did need at least one more season to wrap it all up. The series finale was definitely satisfactory, but it left so much open that I'm saddened it won't be continued (aside from the novelizations that is, which I don't know if those count towards canon).

BUT THIS TIME IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF HIS REVEALED NATURE AS THE ARCHANGEL GABRIEL, AND I AM WARY IF THEY ARE GOING TO BRING HIM BACK JUST TO SIDELINE HIM. BUT THEY BETTER DO HIS CHARACTER JUSTICE AND HAVE HIM IN AS MANY EPISODES AS POSSIBLE.

I WANT A CASTIEL AND GABRIEL FAMILY REUNION IMMEDIATELY WHEN THIS HAPPENS. BICKERING WILL ENSUE, IT'LL BE AWESOME.

THE FORERUNNER NOW IS SERA GAMBLE. SOMEONE WHO I DO NOT TRUST HANDLING THESE CHARACTERS AT ALL. BUT KRIPKE SAYS HE'LL STILL BE WORKING IT IN THE BACKGROUND, AND SINCE THIS IS HIS SHOW HE'S STILL MAKING MOST OF THE CALLS. NOT THAT I TRUST HIM ENTIRELY EITHER, WITH WHAT HE DID IN THE S5 FINALE. BUT AT LEAST WE KNOW HE'S NOT FULLY GONE FROM THE DECISION-MAKING. I HOPE.

*SIGH* I AM VERY VERY NERVOUS AND WARY ABOUT THE SIXTH SEASON BECAUSE OF THIS ARRANGEMENT WHICH ULTIMATELY FUCKED UP THE FIFTH SEASON AS A WHOLE, NGL.

I totally have this horrible fear of what they are gonna do with Gabriel. I'm just so happy about the idea of him coming back and I don't want them to blow it or waste the potential that both the character and Richard have. But then again I feel the same way about Cas/Misha. It sucks having so little faith in the writers, but these are the seeds that they have sowed.

I really hope that it's explained as God bringing him back. If Cas is continually brought back and rewarded for his faith and sacrifice, then so should Gabriel. Then again I've been so pissed about the Chuck = God thing that I kinda think God is a douche now and I never thought that before. I always sort understood his stance and reasonings.

S1 of Dark Angel was much tighter plotwise and Jessica Alba was smokin hot. She went exercise crazy and became weight obsessed by the time S2 rolled around. Man, oh man was there some good gossip back in the DA days. S2 was enjoyable too and it introduced some things that were interesting, if only they had gotten a chance to fully play them out. Mainly I love S2 for the Max/Alec dynamic and lots of Normal. I missed Lydecker though.
Renée: Dollhouse. Victor/Sierra.rogueslayer452 on June 26th, 2010 03:05 am (UTC)
I know, it really sucks that based on what has happened we now have to be incredibly happy yet worried about our favorite characters being brought back and possibly ruined by horrific writing. It's the thing with Supernatural because I do love it, but I'm not gonna lie that they suck with the direction of its writing or the consistency of the writers keeping characterization in check.

I WANT TO THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS BUT DAMMIT, I CAN'T WITH THIS SHOW SOMETIMES. Not until I see evidence that the writers know what they are doing and will do these characters justice.

There's no other explanation I can think about with Gabriel being brought back other than God Himself. I reject the notion that Chuck is God, because in my canon he isn't. That was a lousy kind of "Kripke is God" self-insert which was just ridiculous, but I'm saving that rant/meta thing for another day. No, instead in my canon God is faceless, God isn't revealed to us but instead is this force that understands and has had this plan from the start, and yes. If God can have Castiel resurrected twice for being faithful then Gabriel, who stood up in the end, should be given the same kind of treatment too, don'tcha think? Makes sense for it to happen that way.

S1 of Dark Angel was much tighter plotwise and Jessica Alba was smokin hot. She went exercise crazy and became weight obsessed by the time S2 rolled around.

Yeah, I read something about that, and it's very obvious comparing S1 and S2 just how much weight she'd lost. I do remember Jensen saying at either a convention or an interview some while ago that while filming the second season Jessica wasn't in a great place, that she was underneath a lot of pressure. Which explains the excessive exercise and massive weight loss she endured, and that makes me very sad because she looked absolutely fantastic in season one. :(

But yeah, the Max and Alec dynamic was terrific in S2 and I did like the other things they added in, if only they had expanded more on them to gain further closure. And Lydecker. Oh, Donald Dydecker. I liked seeing him and Logan kind of teaming up briefly, that was fun. And I have to mention my love for Joshua in S2.

It was a total retcon. HOWEVER--

I know we're supposed to take away that Chuck is God. But I personally think that Chuck as the second coming of Jesus makes SO MUCH sense. He's a prophet. He answered the phone asking for Mistress Magda (Mary Magdeline, prostitute). He first appeared wearing a robe. He lives a humble life. He walks the earth at the same time as the Antichrist. He walks the earth during (an) End of Days. He's gathering followers by spreading his message in the form of the Winchester gospels. Dean makes the comment about him having a virgin/whore complex.

Also, Chuck could be God's vessel. He could have been Chuck, except in the last scene, when he was God!Chuck. Or Chuck could have been raptured to Heaven.

DUDE! GABRIEL! I AM GOING TO GO ON SPOILER LOCKDOWN AFTER THIS, I SWEAR. BUT OOOOOOOOOOOH WOW. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! <333333

This! Yes, all of this. God bringing Gabriel back makes a lot of sense, especially since he brought Cas back twice. They could go so many interesting places with this. Would Gabriel still be on the run? Would he go back to Heaven with Cas? And Cas and Gabriel getting more screen time together? YES PLEASE.

The first season of Dark Angel is my favorite as well. I love Jensen, but the first season worked so much better, I thought. Like you said, the mythology was so much smoother.

I TOTALLY DIDN'T EXPECT TO LOOK AT SPOILERS BUT I SAW THAT POSTED OVER AT SPN_GABRIEL EARLIER TODAY, AND IT SAID SPOILERS FOR S6, AND I WAS LIKE. OMG I HAVE TO SEE THIS. AND I WAS PLEASED! \O/ GABRIEEELLLL! PLEASE BRING HIM BACK, SHOW. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

There different scenarios that it can play out, which I'm kind of nervous on how they'll manage it, but really. If anything with Castiel still a regular and now this news about Gabriel? There's got to be some Castiel/Gabriel scenes with this, for real now. If not, they're completely dissing this amazing opportunity.

*nods* Precisely. And you know me, I love me some mythology but mythology that makes sense with the continuity of things. I think had the show gone on longer they would have expanded what they placed into the second season and it wouldn't have been that crowded, but as it stands it didn't have time to develop because it was canceled. So in terms of fluidity with the science fiction realm with the transgenics and Max trying to find her siblings, definitely S1 for sure. I just loved seeing recurring characters like Zack and Tinga and Brin and everyone.

Also, it was because of the episode "Pollo Loco" that I was first introduced to Jensen Ackles amazing acting skills (well, perhaps second, if you count his appearance on a Wishbone episode way back when, lol)

Especially since they're obviously listening to the fans when it comes to bringing him back, and a lot of those fans have been pretty vocal about wanting more Cas and Gabriel scenes. I mean... They gotta do it, right? It would be ridiculous to bring him back and give us nothing else.

Re: Dark Angel. I feel like the first and second seasons really don't jive with each other. I agree, had they not been canceled, they would have been able to develop the new storylines and characters much more. The second season was such a radical departure from the feel of the mythology from the first season that it really jerked me out of the story.

Speaking of Zach and Gabriel, one thing I really hope for when/if they bring back Gabriel is that they do it in a way that doesn't dull the real impact of his death. I mean, that was an awesome scene with Gabriel and Lucifer- which we have discussed at legnth- and I feel like it really meant something, for Gabriel to die and for it to have been Lucifer who killed him. When they brought back Zach on DA, I wasn't sure why they brought him back. He had an ending that really made sense to me and to just bring him back to send him away didn't work for me (although, I get why they did it, since it worked in with the loose end of the reveal that he was still alive in the S2 opener).
Renée: Castiel/Lucifer. Angels of the Lord.rogueslayer452 on June 26th, 2010 04:24 am (UTC)
Though it makes you wonder, if this means they're listening to the fans and their concerns shouldn't they also be considering what else the fans have been concerned about? Especially the failtastic finale and our worries about the sixth season? I know nothing about what the new season is going to entail, but that should at least be something to contemplate. I know that creators shouldn't have the fans dictate what should or should not be in their shows, because that's not of the good of running a show in the first place. But at least hear our voices in what is displeasing us, you know?

The second season was such a radical departure from the feel of the mythology from the first season that it really jerked me out of the story.

Especially when you watch them back to back, it doesn't have that continuity. It's like James Cameron wanted to go in an entirely new direction, which isn't bad but, at least have something in connection to the first season that it feels fluid when transitioning from one season to the other.

I completely agree with the Zack situation. I, too, understood why they did it and it provided that closure, but it seemed kind of...removed from what we knew from the first season, you know? I hope there's at least a solid explanation for Gabriel's return and that it won't be temporary. Because Lord knows I cried directly after that episode aired and I still can't view those scenes with him and Lucifer without tearing up, I can't bear going through something very similar again. I also love his character so much now that I feel almost as protective of him as I do with Castiel, which that means I hope that they handle his characterization and arc well without butchering it or making it seem like it was all for nothing.

Which another thing, I've read people's comments and people are saying that bringing Gabriel back when mean his death scene meant nothing. Which not necessarily. He made a choice that wasn't protecting himself, he stood up for the Winchesters and for humanity, and if he were to be brought back it would be in the best interest of him to continue with that streak, help Castiel and the boys when needed. To prove himself yet again about his faithfulness to the cause.

OMFG! THIS BETTER BE TRUE BECAUSE I WILL CRY TEARS OF JOY. WATCH ME DO A CARTWHEEL RIGHT NOW.

Seriously? There has been no other minor character on SPN who have captured my heart like him. I cried and raged so hard when he died. If they did bring him back, he needs to be a semi-regular like Misha and then both Gabriel and Castiel will be the new sheriffs in heaven. :DDD

I HAD LEGIT TEARS OF JOY IN MY EYES WHEN I READ THIS, NO LIE. I REALLY HOPE THIS BECOMES TRUTH.

I hear you, bb. I pretty much fell in love with his character after the announcement of his true identity as Gabriel. I always liked his reappearances on the show before, but once making him part of the big game I don't know, I fell in love with Gabriel. When "Hammer of the Gods" aired I completely fell apart, I was literally shaking and crying and not in that good way.

THIS MADE MY DAY YESTERDAY.

I think it makes the most sense for God to bring Gabriel back. Much as I would have loved for his death to be a fake (mainly because I thought Gabriel's plan was DUMB and I would have loved for him to be doing something trickier), it was a pretty dead looking death. So I think God bringing him back is the way to go. There was a fanfic that summed it up nicely with Gabriel saying, "Apparently helping you two is a get out of death free card." See? Simple!

They should bring him back to do something awesome. At any rate, I don't think they'll bring him back to kill him. Because...that's what made everyone rage to begin with. But even a few minutes of Gabriel is awesome. He was barely in Mystery Spot, really. But the most important thing is that he would be OUT THERE AGAIN. Even if he only came back for an episode, we have the knowledge that he COULD turn up at any time in that universe. Maybe Castiel can go to him for advice on reordering Heaven, and Gabriel could keep saying no, don't you realize there's a reason I left? Or Gabriel could try to do something to Cas, and it wouldn't work, and Cas could be like, yeah, I'm an archangel now, too, so stop it.

You know what scenario I would LOVE? If God had brought Gabriel back at some point, and Gabe, deciding that he's already died once for this, or maybe God tells him the rest will play out by itself, doesn't let anyone know he's alive. Skip to S6, and the boys are hunting a weird case. They decide it's probably a trickster. Only to find out that it's THE Trickster. It's hard to break old habits, and he still is the angel of justice, after all. (I would say Gabriel should show up and save the boys, but we already got that in 5.19.)
Renée: Castiel. I'm almost out of minutes!rogueslayer452 on June 26th, 2010 02:46 pm (UTC)
Exactly. It doesn't have to be incredibly complicated of an explanation, just have God bring him back and then it's all good.

But even a few minutes of Gabriel is awesome. He was barely in Mystery Spot, really. But the most important thing is that he would be OUT THERE AGAIN. Even if he only came back for an episode, we have the knowledge that he COULD turn up at any time in that universe.

That's my feeling too, just that knowledge that Gabriel still exists and is out there is enough to put calm in my mind. Although I think it would be awesome if he did have a multi-episodic arc because bringing him back in whatever fashion they do they have to use Richard for a great amount of it, given the uproar his death gave they have to use his character development more than just one episode. You know?

You know what scenario I would LOVE? LOL! That would be classic to his character return, for sure! ;D

There are many possible scenarios that this could work, the most popular (and definitely the more plausible version in my eyes) is God bringing Gabriel back because it makes the most sense, given God's treatment to Castiel the two dies he'd died and returned. I just don't want them to back out on this possible decision because now that the cat is out of the bag, fans will be anticipating what they're going to be doing.

I'm just happy there's actual talk about it, hopefully this will come to pass! *crosses fingers*

I love Dark Angel. Both seasons. It's disheartening how many fangirls hate Max and Logan and don't watch the first season except "Pollo Loco". I love Alec, but he's not the most sympathetic character when he's first introduced. The episodes aren't about How Max Is Evil To Alec like some people make them out to be.

Do you want me to tell you about the Dark Angel novels?
Renée: Kahlan. Swept by the wind.rogueslayer452 on June 26th, 2010 06:12 pm (UTC)
Exactly! I really wish people wouldn't think that. Of course, I think the main reason for that kind of attitude amongst the fangirls is because Alec has the same personality as Dean does in S1 of SPN, so when they migrate from that fandom into Dark Angel they still see carefree!Dean Winchester in the role of Alec and, God forbid if another character treats him like he isn't the greatest thing in the world! It's that kind of strong bias that is with those people.

It's kind of interesting because I love Max to death ever since the first season ("girls kick ass, says so on a t-shirt" XD) and I didn't really care for Alec that much until much later when the show actually aired. Heh.

Oh please, I already know about the novels. I have at least two and I couldn't even get through one.
noybusiness on June 26th, 2010 06:36 pm (UTC)
I found the novels to be good.

The siege of Terminal City ends with the exposure of Ames White's attempt to turn public opinion against the transgenics by drugging a transgenic to become a crazy serial killer.

The resolution of the cult plotline: It turns out that they believe a comet will hit the Earth carrying a deadly pathogen which transgenics and Familiars are immune to. Max's DNA holds the key to immunizing humanity. It's basically the same as would have happened on the show. White is killed by Joshua (yay!).

Lydecker is rescued by Max from the cult's stronghold. He says that he can help her find her birth mother.

The Eyes Only Dossier has some interesting information. Manticore supported a project to restore American supremacy called the Phoenix Project, supplying them with the twins of Zack, Brin, Tinga, and Krit. Asha's mother was a mayoral candidate who was kidnapped at the behest of her opponent. She may still be alive in an underground prison. There's more about the May 22nd Movement (the ecoterrorists that held the genetics conference hostage in "Prodigy") and their plans.

Eh, actually many characters that have died on Supernatural have remained that way. No other character has been resurrected on a whim on this show, to be honest. It just seems that way because of Castiel and the sudden resurrection of Adam. But mostly we see reappearances by other characters that are dead, but it's not really a resurrection of sorts.

I find if there's any character worth bringing back it's Gabriel because of his sacrifice and really, if God can bring back Castiel after twice having been killed then He can bring back Gabriel in the same manner.
