March Question Meme: Day Eight
Asked by night_owl_9:

Favorite "So bad it's good" movie?

That could be almost half of my movie collection, honestly. The whole "so bad it's good" category in general is quite subjective, and much like with my music, I'm quite eclectic of what kind of films I love despite the lack of critical acclaim or positive reviews they may have had, or whether they have a cult following or not. More often than not I tend to like films that many others don't, or understand and acknowledge that they're not good but don't care either way because I found something enjoyable about them despite that.

That being said, I think my most favorite from my collection is probably the Resident Evil franchise, because while they don't follow the video games at all and aren't remotely scary, the films are still incredibly entertaining action-packed where Milla kicks major ass, and that is all I'm looking for, to be honest. My second favorite would have to be Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, because I was obsessed with it when it came out and even if it seems completely nonsensical it was still entertaining and, considering the theories surrounding The Blair Witch some of the events that happened made sense in a strange way. Following that would be any teen or slasher movie from the 90s/early 00s, because I basically live for those.

(I wanted to say things like Spice World and Josie and the Pussycats or some J-Horror splatter films like The Machine Girl or Tokyo Gore Police, but those were intentionally created to be outrageously ridiculous thus awesome so I didn't know if they counted or not; regardless though, I loved them as well and they're definitely among my favorites.)

omg, spice world really brings back the memories! i haven't seen it in ages, but it was genuine fun (prob bc it was based on fun source material). were you a big spice girls fan as a kid? did you have a favourite?

OMG YES. Around fifth/sixth grade I had just gotten into them, which is when their movie came out I believe, and I loved them so much. I have the Spice Girl Barbie dolls that were sold separately (I only have two though, and I'm still wanting to complete the entire group). I remember really liking Sporty, Scary and Posh, though I don't think I had an absolute favorite.

Spice World is an instant classic for me, because it's just absolute fun. They don't take themselves too seriously, and it was obviously made to be silly and fun and kind of poking fun at themselves at times, and truly was for the fans. ♥

ah, interesting! i was a fan of baby and posh as a kid, then got into a ginger stage, and now, looking back, i think scary was the coolest :D (guess i'm just not a sporty person? i did love that one duet she sang with bryan adams, though.)

spice world is definitely so much fun <3 i think it's one of the most underrated movies from the 90's, honestly.

You can definitely count the Spice Girls movie in that category. I bloody love it though.

It's pretty much a classic, in my book. ;) It's so unadulteratedly silly and fun.

It's a damn good genius piece of cinema, I say! *slams fist on table*

In seriousness, it's absolutely silly but I love it to death. I love the Spice Girls and I love that they did a movie specifically for the fans and didn't take themselves to seriously, even poking fun at themselves in the process. Plus, it has some iconic moments that will never get old. ;)

Oh lord, Josie and the Pussycats. That movie is definitely a big "so bad it's (adorably) good" for me.

It's such a hilarious satirical piece of genius. I love the dramatic over-acting, the blatant product placement, the cheesiness, but it's so adorable all the same. I still love all the songs. :)

Josie and the Pussycats ( ♥ ) I used to be obsessed with the soundtrack to that movie and listened to it all the time.

I remember downloading "Three Small Words" from Napster or Kazaa way back when because it played during the trailers before finally getting all the rest of the soundtrack. I loved it. ♥

Oh man, Spice World and The Machine Girl! That takes me back XD Good times. Thank you for answering my question!

You're welcome! It's such an fascinating question because I have a lot of "so bad it's good" things, from movies to music to books. ;)

I love the Resident Evil-movies and i'm completely unashamed about it <3

I know that fans of the video games were upset that the movies don't follow any of the in-game storylines, which if you were looking for a straight-up adaptation I completely understand. But after the first film it should have been clear that they were going in their own direction and have remained completely unapologetic with how they presented the content (i.e. it's less scary and more of an action franchise) and honestly? That's why I love them so much. Well, that and Milla being absolutely awesome, but that's a given. ;)

Have you ever seen "Troll 2"? That one is pretty much the greatest "so bad it's good" movie I've seen. It has this classic gem of acting:

It's impossible to not know what Troll 2 is at this point, lol. In truth, I've only seen the Rifftrax version of this film, not the film by itself. Which sometimes is better since MST3K can often make something that is absolutely ridiculous or bad seen tolerable through witty commentary (see: Manos: The Hands of Fate). But honestly, this movie is probably in its own category of "so bad it's actually entertaining".
