May the odds be ever in your favor.
++ It's that time of the year for show renewal/cancellation announcements. American Gods was renewed for a second season after only two episodes! That is absolutely outstanding and wonderful! Elementary was also renewed, it took some time for it to be announced but I'm utterly relieved nonetheless. Agents of Shield and Brooklyn Nine-Nine both have renewals for their respective fifth seasons. I'm sad about Powerless though, it was a cute little show that deserved more attention. And while I haven't even bothered with Once Upon A Time since the first season, just hearing the kerfuffle surrounding their recent announcements has been quite a doozy.

++ Sleepy Hollow has finally been cancelled! I know it's a bit odd to be celebrating the axing of a show, but let's be real, this one is probably the most deserving for obvious reasons.

This show started out with so much potential and promise, it was silly and ridiculous but honestly fun and entertaining, with a diverse cast and the relationship and equal partnership between Ichabod and Abbie being one of the biggest draws of the show. But after the first season the original showrunner/writers left and someone else came in and completely ruined everything that made the first season good. From disrespecting the fanbase and the story/characters to mistreating the actors, especially what they did to Nicole Beharie, the show dug its own grave. This is one of those few examples of shows that started off strong but it all went downhill so quickly. Needless to say, many predicted this cancellation from a mile away, it's just a shame that it didn't happen much sooner. Good riddance, either way.

As a sidenote though, it's genuinely disappointing that we'll never actually get to see Abbie/Ichabod become canon as they should've been, something else the show tried to sideline. I do hope that Nicole and Tom get to work together again in the future, their chemistry was just off the charts and they clearly adored working with each other.

I was insanely happy when I learnt that "Elementary" was renewed too. I adore Lucy Liu! Next to "Reign" and "The Americans" the only thing I seriously watch at the moment.

The only time I was excited about "Once Upon A Time" was when I was hoping that Hook/Aurora would become a thing in season 2. The actors had great chemistry (hope they get to work together on another project someday) and I like the whole princess/pirate idea – it reminded me of Han/Leia on "Star Wars". :) But well, that didn't work out and the show turned around and changed course too many times. It was hard to stay interested. At least that was how it was for me.

I never watched "Sleepy Hollow" – just not my thing but I read how the lead actress was mistreated by the showrunners and the network, apparently even had to ask to have her twitter linked to the twitter account of the show (I don't know how that works as I don't use twitter but yeah)... it sounded awful. :(
Renée: Elementary. Joan Watson.rogueslayer452 on May 16th, 2017 02:49 am (UTC)
Lucy Liu is such a goddess, I love her so much. ♥

Have you seen The Tudors? They shared a few scenes during the third season, short but sweet. It's definitely why some shipped Aurora/Hook because the two already had amazing chemistry from before.

I initially liked the concept of OUAT when it first premiered, it was new and interesting, but it was clear that after the first season they didn't really have a plan. They just couldn't maintain the momentum they started with. But I think my biggest problem was how they wasted so many characters and their potential. They introduced so many of them, only for them to be sidelined or forgotten in favor of the mains, who also got screwed over by the writing. Also they seemed the recycle the same thing over and over again, and it got old fast. I didn't like the direction it was taking so I quit very early on before things got super weird.

They also didn't invite her to the DVD commentaries during one of the seasons, despite her being the main lead. They basically treated her like shit post-S1. It was honestly horrible. They also blatantly fired Orlando Jones after S2, despite the fact his character played an important role. Essentially whoever took over the show after the first season wanted to make the show about the White Male Lead instead of the diverse ensemble cast it started with. It was quite racist, so I'm glad that it got cancelled. Even though it should've been much sooner.
Nina: <hex> good timeshoneymink on May 16th, 2017 07:37 am (UTC)
Me too. Every since "Ally McBeal" really. She's brilliant.

Hah, yes. I've watched "The Tudors" being a bit obsessed with period drama and all. But that's definitely not why I shipped Hook/Aurora. Mary/Philip couldn't have been any more different as people. Though I agree their scenes were very sweet. Colin was Sarah's first on-screen kiss.

And yes, that's my main problem with "Once Upon A Time" too – they brought on more and more characters and forgot about old ones, they started plotlines then axed them for something more shiny until everything was such an inconsitent mess. I sat through season 2 – I liked the first half, the second was kind of meh but I still really liked Cora. Then tried to watch season 3 but quit when they killed off Henry's father. Not because I felt very strongly about the ship but because I felt this is totally contrary to the premise of the show which was to bring the happy endings back. That's when I realised – yeah, could have been a good show but they blew it. They have no concept. Sad. Next.

It's really terrible when new showrunners come on board and "fix" something that wasn't broken and make your favourite show into something completely different. I thought for a second about at least trying one epsiode since I remember Janina Gavankar fondly from "The L Word" but yeah... then I didn't for reasons mentioned above.

I don't get why they don't cancel shows when showrrunners leave, honestly. And why did the original person leave, anyway? You're right that it sounds like they missed everything that made the show good.
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 27th, 2017 11:08 am (UTC)
Most likely because it's a slippery slope. It's always a gamble when a showrunner leaves (for whatever reason) and another takes their place, sometimes it can be a terrible decision based on executive meddling and network expectations while other times it can be a great opportunity. There are new showrunners who still manage to keep up the original momentum or even improve upon it and make it better, while unfortunately sometimes there are those that run it straight into the ground and ruin a good thing. You can't always know for certain the outcome.

As for what happened with SW, I'm not entirely sure the exact reasoning or the circumstances which led to such a decision. Regardless, the show got fucked over before it even had a chance to shine, and it sucks.

Good Job American Gods!!! And I am glad SHIELD will be back next season even if I did't enjoy much the Ghost Rider Storyline (but now we are back to VERY good episodes... The second half of the season was VERY VERY good!) YAY for Brooklyn Nine-Nine too! It'a a happy show and it's always fun to watch!

I'm about to watch the season finale of OUAT but I think for me it will be a series finale! The show jumped the shark so many times now...
Renée: Agents of Shield. Skye.rogueslayer452 on May 15th, 2017 06:59 pm (UTC)
The fourth season of Agents of Shield has been incredibly solid overall, both storylines were solid in their own right and I'm so happy that they're getting another season! Some speculated that with the upcoming Inhumans series on the same network that AOS might not be renewed since it might clash, but I'm happy that's not the case.

I remember when OUAT first premiered and I was so enthralled with the concept, but then after the first season it just went in an entirely different direction than I was expecting, and I was already watching too many things at that time so I dropped it (hoping that somehow I would catch up). But hearing how the show continued on since then, with them jumping the shark ten times over, I'm kinda glad I didn't. It's honestly astonishing that they've continued on for this long.

I'm interested to see where they can possibly take OUAT next season.
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 15th, 2017 06:40 pm (UTC)
I tried reading their plans for it, but got so confused because it just befuddles me that they're essentially rebooting the show by gender-switching the plot and getting rid of pretty much all of the cast aside from a few. IDK.

I am curious too. I have to say i really enjoyed the spin off they did with alice in wonderland. It's clear they have the potential to write a decent show, maybe i enjoyed Alice so much because it was short. Could be the issue with ouat is that there's too many episodes.

The magic Carrie Picture I have brought me good fortune with these season. I get to see another year of My Mother Melinda May kicking ass, and B99 which proves non offensive Screwball comedy can THRIVE!

Ouat is dead to me...it has been for a while.

I am so glad Sleepy Hollow is gone, despite Tom Mison is a nice person, I wanted vengence for the way they treated my daughter ABBIE!

I'm so happy that we get to see more of Daisy and Melinda May, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine just makes me so happy. I love that it's a non-offensive comedy that still manages to be absolutely hilarious, but also tackle some tough issues. The recent episode with them dealing with racial profiling was perfection, and they handled it beautifully. Just, ugh, I love my shows. ♥

I pretty much stopped watching OUAT after the first season. I tried a little of S2 but realized that it just wasn't going in the direction I originally thought it was and it didn't interest me, so I dropped it. Hearing what has happened since then makes me kinda glad I did because it sounds like an utter trainwreck.

Like, I'm so beyond bitter and angry with how they treated Abbie/Nicole. She deserved better than that.

I stopped watching OUAT a year ago (I think? it feels so long ago). I liked it less and less as it kept going and it was high time for me to stop watching. It's weird that they're going to keep doing the show without several main characters, but the result might actually be much better.
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 16th, 2017 03:08 am (UTC)
I actually predict that the seventh season will be its last, since I can't see it maintaining itself beyond that especially with it essentially being a reboot of the first season and with so many of the original cast gone. Most of the fans that still stuck by the show after all this time probably won't be with it because of that alone.

I have American Gods set up to record but I haven't watched anything yet. I haven't read the book(s?) it's based on, but for it to be renewed already after two episodes is huge. I need to watch the episodes I haven't seen yet.
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 16th, 2017 01:39 am (UTC)
It's based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, and even though I also haven't read it for myself I knew that many people were excited about the adaptation, from who was adapting it (Bryan Fuller) to the casting announcements made. I vaguely know what it's about but so far I'm intrigued. The show is absolutely gorgeous, and the writing is superb.

There's only been three episodes so far (out of eight this season), so I think you'll be able to catch up just fine. :)
Nadine: Brooklyn 99 - Holtmalicat on May 15th, 2017 08:43 pm (UTC)
Actually they had already renewed American Gods before it even aired but they announced it later :)
I'm really happy about B99. It's rare for a comedy show to still have the same quality in season 4!

Sleepy Hollow tanked so hard in season 2,it should have been cancelled back then maybe but DEFINITELY after the third season when Abbie died!
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 16th, 2017 01:31 am (UTC)
Oh, I didn't know that, that's even better! :D

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of those rare gems when it comes to comedies. I cannot believe we are blessed with such a genuinely hilarious comedy show that doesn't use offensive jokes for a cheap laugh and still maintains its quality through the brilliance of the writers and the performances of the actors. I mean, their comedic timing is always on point. ♥

It's still unbelievable that they get a fourth season after all of that bullshit. And they knew it was bullshit, they just didn't care.

Renéerogueslayer452 on May 16th, 2017 08:13 pm (UTC)
It seems many are. I'm just going by my observations, but it's just kinda shitty to get rid of most of the cast aside from a few "fan favorites" for a rebooted season. Could it be actually good? Who knows, but I just don't think its necessary after such a long, drawn out show like this one.
Abbeyplace_to_hide on May 17th, 2017 04:31 am (UTC)
I know! I think it's shitty too. I know. And now it's been said that it'll be on Friday nights when the fall tv schedule starts. Friday nights are where tv shows go to DIE. Most of the time.

I haven't gotten a chance to watch American Gods yet, but I'm happy it was renewed!

Ugh, OUAT. I haven't watched in years because they either ruined or wrote out every character and relationship I cared about, and while I liked to premise that just wasn't enough anymore. "Kerfuffle" is a great way to describe what's going on now, though. I've been watching from a distance like, "Really show? Really?"

I feel the same way about Sleepy Hollow. I got behind during S2, and when I heard about Abbie I never got caught back up. I will always miss the show we got in the first season, but I'm pretty happy they don't get to make anymore.
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 16th, 2017 08:11 pm (UTC)
I enjoyed the concept when OUAT first premiered, but they definitely ruined it by not really knowing where they wanted the story to go beyond that, and just kept retconning or recycling the same thing over and over and going nowhere fast. Both the show and its fandom got incredibly messy as time went on, so I'm kinda glad that I stopped watching after the first season. Someone mentioned that they could've done the show differently, like either made the show an anthology (to focus on different characters each season) or just made it into a miniseries instead.

Sleepy Hollow was such a travesty. I still cannot believe the bullshit that happened post-S1, and while I know they probably won't ever admit to fucking up, it still astounds me that they seemed to just not give a shit especially in light of the massive outrage that happened after S3.

It always seems like the first seasons of some shows tend to be the best when compared to the mess they became afterwards, most likely since they show the promise of what they could've been.
Arkadyarkady_ on May 17th, 2017 06:46 am (UTC)
Wow, Sleepy Hollow was still being made?
Renéerogueslayer452 on May 17th, 2017 08:45 am (UTC)
Unfortunately. I would've thought that after the massive outrage and backlash that sparked from the S3 finale it would've been cancelled, but nope, apparently not. At least it's now no more.

Wanheda: AoS | her greatest weaknessgublers on May 18th, 2017 12:14 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think it's going to be the last season we'll get, as depressing as this is. First they put the show at 10pm and now it'll be on Fridays? :/

It's such a good show! It's got everything you need. Action, superheroes, humour, interesting and flawed characters, great character development and LOVE. Everyone loves everyone so much it hurts. It's amazing ♥

Hooray for Elementary! Slightly bummed about Powerless, though I'm surprised they didn't try to do the same thing with Supergirl and move it onto CW. Probably because it was too comedic to fit in their lineup?

I'm continually confused why they didn't just ax Sleepy Hollow last year, and who in their right mind would actually think the show would survive. Like, you killed off half your leads, done away with a good portion of the original cast...yeah. I'm just really, really curious what was going through the writers' minds at the time.
Renée: Arrow. Sara Lance.rogueslayer452 on May 17th, 2017 06:15 pm (UTC)
Probably. It just doesn't fit what the CW considers to be their DCTV demographic lineup, unfortunately. If it doesn't fit into their Arrowverse in some capacity, then it just won't do. Perhaps Powerless might've worked better on someplace like Freeform?

Seriously, though. I don't know if they truly lacked self-awareness or just didn't really care. I think more of the latter since I'm pretty sure they knew what they were doing when they were mistreating Nicole Beharie and some of the other actors they way they did. I mean, with the outrage that occurred how could they not understand? And yet still had the audacity to change everything that made everyone enjoy the show in the first place in S1. Just, ugh.
M: SH - PARTNERS4LIFEmfirefly10 on May 19th, 2017 10:27 pm (UTC)
I don't know what FOX was thinking when they renewed SH last year. I guess they wanted to "prove" they didn't need Abbie/Nicole but like...they did. Obviously.

It's such a shame how they destroyed this show. Season 1 was awesome and had so much potential but they just did EVERYTHING wrong in season 2. Season 3 was better, imo, until the last few episodes where everything fell apart and I can't even talk about what they did to Abbie because it will just be capslock screaming. Abbie/Ichabod will go down as one of those "could've had it all" ships that I never quite get over. :(
Renée: BSG. Natalie is not pleased.rogueslayer452 on May 20th, 2017 07:40 am (UTC)
They weren't thinking. I mean, there was no way none of them could've been oblivious to the massive outrage and backlash against the show at that point once they killed off Abbie. The fact they even tried to continue the show without her (much less even replace her and move locations away from the show title) just proves how much they weren't thinking and just didn't care. They legit thought that a White Male could be enough to sustain the show.

Abbie/Ichabod will go down as one of those "could've had it all" ships that I never quite get over. :(

I know. It breaks my heart, but also makes me so angry and bitter. Ugh.
M: SH - one true witnessmfirefly10 on May 22nd, 2017 09:02 am (UTC)
What's even more ridiculous was that they got a taste of how the audience would react to Abbie's death when they "killed" her in the mid-season finale. They saw how outraged people were at even the thought that Abbie might be dead so how the hell did they think fans were going to react when they killed her for real? Like, use your brains, people.

While I think it was absolutely stupid to try to continue the show without her, the least they could've done was let her live. There were so many ways they could've written her out without killing her. We're talking about a supernatural show that's played around with time travel before. Just say Abbie went through a portal into the future or something. Use some old-age makeup on Tom Mison and have their last scene together be old-Ichabod reuniting with Abbie in the future. That way, whatever the show chose to do with Ichabod in the present, fans would know he and Abbie found their way back to each other in the end. Like, it's really not that hard to come up with this stuff but they just chose the easy way out and killed her off.

This show did a million things wrong, but I will never understand how anyone in a position of power could've seen the chemistry between Tom and Nicole and NOT gone there with their characters. Maybe that wasn't in their initial plan for the series and that's fine. But how the hell do you ignore that kind of natural chemistry? One can only assume racism played a factor in not putting them together because it certainly wasn't a lack of chemistry or fan support. So yeah, I'm with you on the anger/bitterness :)

The only other show that I can think of that is similar to this would probably be Heroes. I never fell in and out of love for a show as quickly as I did that one. Sleepy Hollow followed suit in that way, as in it had a promising start but it crashed and burned so fast.

Have you seen American Gods, what's it like? I have to watch it - I've found that I don't like Neil Gaiman's novels (Good Omens excepted), but I do like his ideas, so an adaptation might be perfect.
Renéerogueslayer452 on June 4th, 2017 07:26 pm (UTC)
Personally, I really enjoy it. The pacing can be weird sometimes, but overall it's a fantastic and gorgeous show. If you're familiar with anything Bryan Fuller has done (Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Hannibal, etc) there is definitely a lot of his influence on the show, particularly of the latter because it is quite a graphic show. Fromm the writing, the cinematography, the performances by all the actors, there is a beautiful balance that makes it all work, imho.

I know that the show might not be for everyone, though. So keep that in mind if/when you decide to check it out. But I know fans of the book have been incredibly pleased with how the show has turned out so far.
