April Question Meme: Day Thirteen
Asked by verdande_mi:

What’s your favourite season of your favourite show?

The third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will always be my favorite, which is sort of biased in a way since that's when I first started really watching the show when it was airing. But this season also has many great moments and themes. I liked that it's the final year of high school, that things are changing with characters and their relationships, I loved the introduction of Faith and her character arc, the Mayor is one of my favorite villains, and that finale was so awesome. It was a satisfying ending to a season, in my opinion. My favorite line in the finale was when Oz made the comment about surviving not the battle that they had just fought and won, but high school. The whole show was a huge metaphor of growing up in stages, but I liked how the third season was like a bookend to the high school experience.

While I loved the entirety of Battlestar Galactica, season two is certainly the one I revisit the most. I just loved how it flowed, and I genuinely have quite a handful of favorite episodes from that season, including the Pegasus episodes which were, hard to watch yes, but very important. And of course, that fucking finale was absolutely brilliant, anybody who has watched the show cannot deny how utterly fantastic that season finale was. BSG did some pretty awesome cliffhanger finales, but this one was very creatively done and it did create an amazing amount of controversy, which I loved.

Season one of Lost Girl for the simplicity of the seasonal arc. I do like the expansion of the mythology and plot, but I liked how intimate and personal the first season was since it introduced us to these characters, to this world, and it had more of a BTVS feel to the way it operated. Basically, it was just more lighthearted, which in comparison to the direction the show has gone into lately is something I kind of prefer at the moment.

Although it only had two seasons, the first season of Dark Angel is definitely my favorite, no contest. I just loved the realism in the world-building the show presented, especially with the genetically engineered and science fiction aspects (which got quite convoluted in the second season, ngl); I also liked how the first season was more of a personal journey for Max, from her life and her friends to her relationship with Logan and her main objective in searching for her siblings. I have watched and rewatched the entire first season without skipping any episodes, and that says a lot when I watch something.

The first season of Veronica Mars was the Golden Season. There was nothing I disliked about that season, the style and construct of it, the writing, the relationships between characters, the unraveling of the mystery, it was just perfect.

The Mayor is definitely my favorite BTVS Big Bad. He hits just the right balance of being genuinely threatening while also being really fun to watch. My personal favorite season of BTVS is 5, but 3 is also amazingly good, with an immensely satisfying finale.

I was also really fascinated by his relationship with Faith, too. Like, there was that paternal instinct in the way he genuinely cared for her, and I liked seeing the comparison between him and Faith versus Giles and Buffy. And his personality, the way he was jolly was very unsettling, that it was truly frightening. I think the only other villain on the Buffyverse that matched him was perhaps Glory.

Speaking of, oh yes S5 was so good too. Perhaps my second favorite season of the series. It was quite a game-changer, from everything surrounding Dawn to Joyce's devastating death to Buffy's sacrifice. It was just, ugh. Such a good season.

I loved how refreshing the show seemed at the time. A teenage private detective who helped and got justice for the downtrodden (esp since she was an outcast herself), who was trying to figure out the truth of her best friend's murder, and who also had to deal with personal issues as well.

The first season just had all the right rhythm and formula, and they tried to emulate that with the other seasons but it just never came close.

Season 3 of Buffy is my favourite too, it feels much better-structured to me than the more popular choice of season 2 (I loved the second half of season 2, but I'm pretty meh on the first half). Plus there are tons of classic episodes that year with Homecoming, Band Candy, Lovers Walk, The Wish, Dopelgangland, Earshot, The Prom etc etc

I'm guessing season two is picked more often because of its second act. It was a complete game-changer for the direction the series was going into at that time, I think. Which is understandable.

But I'm in agreement about the structure of the third season. It felt more organic, it flowed better and had a lovely beginning, middle and end of the way everything was going, characters and development and relationships and all of that. It felt more solid in its presentation and writing and episodic storylines. Leading to, as you pointed out, those amazing and unforgettable episodes. I think S3 had more episodes I have ever loved and rewatched than any other season.

This reminds me (again) that I really should do a re-watch of Buffy and actually watch till the end this time. I loved it back in the day, but then stopped watching for reasons I don't remember. Think I stopped sometime in season 4, but I've seen a few eisodes from later seasons.

Anyway I agree about Faith; she brought a new dynamic.

You totally should! :D The fifth season is perhaps my second favorite behind the third season.

I remember that I stopped watching the sixth season because I just couldn't get into it, but I watched it all after the DVDs came out. It's my least favorite season of the show, but I now understand what the intent was for it, even if it didn't make a strong impression on me.
