April Question Meme: Day Eighteen (belated)
Asked by wheatear:

Pick a cast from any fandom and do a gender/sex swap.

I do think about genderbending for some of my fandoms, though I don't always have a definitive idea for who should portray certain characters. The only fandom that I have the majority of the characters swapped would be Supernatural, because I always imagined what a better show and story it would have been had it been mainly a woman ensemble. There's already a popular fancasting, which I have adopted as well, with some tweaks.

** Amber Heard (specifically from Drive Angry, which is the main reference for this pick) as Dean Winchester

As my alternative, I always kind of thought Katee Sackhoff would be perfect as a girl version of Dean, since her role as Kara Thrace from Battlestar Galactica was quite similar to the character.

** Missy Peregrym (Stick It!) as Sam Winchester

** Bridget Regan (Legend of the Seeker) as Castiel

** Jaime Murray (Warehouse 13) as Crowley

** Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) as Bobby Singer

Oh, and I also have a genderbend fancasting for The Hobbit. At least, for one of the characters. For Thorin I'm thinking of either Stephanie Jacobsen (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) or Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Aside from their ability to be stoically badass, they both have fabulous hair, which, imho, is a huge contributing factor, heh.

I love seeing the different casting ideas, and sometimes I think some choices could actually work really well. It makes me wish that they were real concepts, and not just something fans made up.

ooh, I like Bridget Regan as Castiel!

For the first three seasons of Supernatural, I totally pretended Sam was a Samantha, and played by Cristin Milioti, because I loved Jensen's portrayal of Dean, but I really wanted a brother/sister dynamic.

I kinda love that idea, actually. I think that would have been interesting had there been a brother and sister dynamic, seeing where they ended up and how their relationship would have progressed.

Oh, the world always needs more Jaime Murray. <3 I've loved her since Hustle. Also, I don't watch SPN, but I know Crowley is the one played by Mark Sheppard, who's also in W13, so it's a nice connection.

I totally didn't make that connection at first! That's so funny. ;D

But yeah, Jaime Murray would just be perfect for such a role. She'd be perfect for any role, actually.

I'm glad that someone else thinks of Bridget Regan as a female!Castiel. She is the only one I can see in the role. It might have been you who gave me that idea... Hm...

lol, it probably was me at some point. I had already fancasted her as my girl!Castiel long ago, and I still hold to it. She's just perfect.

I haven't watched SPN in a long time, but I'd have stuck it out if this was the cast.

I stopped watching seasons ago.

I feel like had there been an all-female cast, with better writers, the direction of the story would have been quite different in a good way. It would be the kind of thing I would want to watch. They could have taken that opportunity with the spinoff concept, but nope.

I want to reply to this since I asked the question, but I don't actually know Supernatural at all so I can't really comment. The whole process of gender-swapping is fascinating though, it does make you think about how the story and characters might change when you alter the sex of the characters...

It is fascinating, and with things that are mostly male-dominated, it would be interesting to see how the roles were switched up.

Something like Supernatural, for example, has very little women featured, and whenever they do appear they are poorly treated, unfortunately. So by genderswapping the characters, it could actually improve some things. At least, in my opinion, it would be much better seeing how the story would be if the main players were women instead of men. Their situations would be similar, but operated much differently. And I like playing with such ideas.
