April Question Meme: Day Twenty-Three
Asked by mfirefly10:

A TV show you think absolutely everyone should watch at some point in their life. You can make it a movie if you can't pick one show :)

Battlestar Galactica, no contest.

There are quite a handful shows out there that I think everyone should watch, but Battlestar Galactica is the one that tops the list. Even if you don't consider yourself a fan of science fiction or don't normally venture into this particular genre, I definitely think you should give the show a try. It has amazing storytelling with well-rounded, complex characters in complicated situations and doing what they have to in order to survive; and the story is all about the characters, their relationships and their personal arcs and developments, about trust and betrayal and questioning what it means to be human, understanding the morality between human and a free-thinking, breathing, feeling machine entity. It's just, I can't gush about it enough. In my opinion, it's truly phenomenal and one of the best epic science fiction television series I have ever watched. So yeah, I highly recommend it to everyone who has yet to experience how frakking awesome it is.

Honorable mentions: Firefly and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles are of the same vein, amazing science fiction shows that have affected me in a particular way and that everyone should watch.

My mother and I are re-watching Caprica/BSG right now. Today's episode was "Six of One".

It's been a while since I've rewatched BSG (as in all the way through, not just random episodes), I think I should get on that. :)

Mom and I typically watch one episode or movie on Blu-Ray a day. In this case, we started with Caprica, then Blood & Chrome, before BSG. We saw the Miniseries in two parts on two nights, because that's how it is on Blu-Ray, although it was put together on the DVD.

We saw the televised version of the Caprica pilot, because it actually re-edited some dialogue and visuals to improve them and only cut a bit of nudity, but we saw the extended versions of "Pegasus", Razor, "Unfinished Business", and we will see the extended versions of "A Disquiet Follows My Soul", "Islanded in a Stream of Stars" and "Daybreak".

We watched Razor between "The Captain's Hand" and "Downloaded", and The Plan between "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2" and "Occupation". We watch minisodes on the same day as proper installments, since they're just Bonus Features or online, so we saw Razor Flashbacks right after Blood & Chrome, and The Resistance right after The Plan, and will see The Face of the Enemy right after "Sometimes a Great Notion".

I think that next time we re-watch, though, I want to see The Plan between Blood & Chrome(/Razor Flashbacks) and "Miniseries, Part 1". Then The Resistance will be right after "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2", obviously.

I'd qualify BSG a little in that I personally think the writing fell down after season2.0 - once Cain was killed, the show started to flail and never stopped. But the miniseries? Season one and 2.0? Best tv ever made.

Breaking Bad beats it in maintaining the high quality but the subject matter is always going to be awkward there.

While I do think it suffered a bit especially in the later seasons, I still loved and enjoyed it from beginning to end. It's not just quality television, it's quality storytelling, and I truly think everyone needs to watch it at least once in their lives just to experience it.

It's actually kind of great seeing newcomers get into the show for the first time and reacting to it, it's like traveling back in time all over again when everything was still new and fresh and there were still discussions happening on communities and message boards and all the theories about who is a Cylon, will they get to Earth, etc. It's awesome. :D

Agreed on all 3! I'm still in my first watch of BSG though, slightly on hiatus when I decided I had to rewatch Farscape and Stargate lol =) I'd just started s3 (of BSG) and somehow I find the overall storyline a bit lacking at this point.. But like you said, it's a show about characters first and formost, and I absolutely love those.

The show does suffer through moments of lulls, which is kind of typical even for some of the best shows. But I think the overall payoff is worth it, imho. Of course, I'm very biased. ;)

I agree with BSG. Sarah Connor Chronicles was great as well. While being a Whedon fan, I'm not big on Firefly. Also, I wonder if I should watch that new movie written by him, In Your Eyes, it doesn't really appeal to me.

I'm not a Shakespeare fan, but I liked his version of Much Ado About Nothing. So I'm willing to give In Your Eyes a chance.

Why aren't you big on Firefly?

I enjoyed Much Ado About Nothing for Shakespeare and for the well-known and well-liked cast. :-)

Space westerns aren't my thing. I didn't like Defiance either (I watched all of Season 1 but I won't watch Season 2). Though Serenity was a bit more to my taste than Firefly, possibly because there was more action.

Excellent answer! Though I'm obviously biased :)

Don't worry, I'm also biased. I feel like anytime anyone asks which show I would recommend the most, I would say BSG with no hesitation, even though there are other shows I also think many people should watch at some point in their lives. Heh. ;)
an idea is bulletproof: BSG - make me smile R/Aelizalavelle on April 29th, 2014 05:02 pm (UTC)
Excellent rec. I suggest this one a lot. It's not a typical sci-fi show. It can be enjoyed by pretty much everyone and I think says a lot of important things.
Renée: Battlestar Galactica.rogueslayer452 on May 2nd, 2014 03:52 pm (UTC)
Yes, exactly. Like myself, I wasn't that huge into science fiction, and I'm rather picky when it comes to the genre, but like with Firefly, Battlestar Galactica was a space opera. A political space opera to be exact, where it was more about the people (human and Cylon alike) and their relationships and the situations they had to constantly struggle in. Anyone can get into it because the scifi aspect is a mere backdrop for everything else that is happening.
