July Question Meme: Day Eighteen
Asked by ragnarok_08:

Favorite shows from childhood?

I pretty much grew up on Disney Channel, back when they actually had diverse and quality programming for literally everyone regardless of age, along with several other channels as well such as PBS and FOX Kids, with Nickelodeon being more into my preteen years. And I watched and rewatched many of those shows ad nauseum, we honestly could be here forever as I attempt to list off all of them.

However, narrowing it down to my top five favorites, it would have to be: Ocean Girl, Gargoyles, My Little Pony, Clarissa Explains It All, and of course Sesame Street.

Gargoyles still owns. And it hits a lot of points on things people care about now, like strong female characters (but on a kids show, from two decades ago). Elisa was just done so well. And she was mixed race on top of it. And Demona had a great character arc. Then there's Xanatos, who had one of the most convincing 'bad guy to good guy' arcs I've seen.

Gargoyles definitely one of those shows that still holds up today, because it just offered so much with its content. It was surprisingly very diverse, it was dark and deep and engaging with the characters. It was such a rare treasure that looking back on it now, while I'm not shocked since 90s seemed to have quite a handful of shows with diversity and certain subject matters, it was still quite impressive especially for a kids cartoon on the Disney Channel.

And sadly it's a glaring contrast to today where you don't often see that with much programming, kids, cartoons or otherwise.
