The Shannara Chronicles
Basically, the previews for The Shannara Chronicles are looking quite good.

Since I haven't read the Shannara series I'm not familiar with this universe or what it's about exactly, but just judging from the trailers and description alone it is definitely a high fantasy series with plenty of rich world-building and characters. If this does well, I have a feeling it may be the answer to those looking for a Game of Thrones replacement. Despite it being on MTV, which understandably may repel some people, just seeing the trailers and behind the scenes stuff alone shows that they've given The Shannara Chronicles quite a large budget to produce. Granted a big budget doesn't always equal quality, but since it looks like a fantasy version of The 100 it may pleasantly surprise people. Plus it was filmed in New Zealand, which is considerably a good sign when you take into account the other epic fantasy films and series that have been filmed there (see: Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Legend of the Seeker, Xena: Warrior Princess). If this gains popularity, hopefully there will be more fantasy series along this vein. I miss having some epic fantasy and even lighthearted fantasy shows on television. When you have a mixture of the two, or something that holds strong in its own storytelling, adapted or not, it can become something great. Not everything has to be "darker and edgier" in order to be taken seriously or be considered good storytelling.

I agree with everything you said. Which you already know since we talked about it not that long ago, but it bears repeating. Yay for more not-GoT fantasy! :-)

Talk of the devil... This looks like it could be great. And it has Travis Fimmel (Ragnar from Vikings) and Ryan Robbins (who's in every TV show nowadays, but somehow still found the time to be in a movie... does he ever sleep?).

My two main thoughts on it:

1. It looks pretty as hell.
2. It will be good to see more light-hearted fantasy around (so many TV series lately seem to be going for darker).

Thanks for linkage! I hadn't heard of it before your post.

I hadn't heard about it before until it was mentioned at SDCC, which got me curious, then the new preview was released so I needed to see more about it.

It does look very gorgeous, and not just from the benefits of filming in New Zealand. A lot of the shots are beautifully done to show this world, especially where they show the fallen down Space Needle and the ship wreckage with vegetation all around it. Just shots like that are incredibly gorgeous to me, tbh. It makes you feel familiar in this world, but at the same time it's not our world, as seen with the other locations.

And I agree, too many things want to be darker and grittier in order to be seen as adult or to be taken seriously, and that is not always the answer for good storytelling. I particularly have a dislike for things that desaturates color for that "darker" effect. No. Bring more color, more life into these worlds.

Thank you for the links. It looks really interesting (plus it gets bonus points for Manu Bennett being in it ^^). I had not heard of it before I read your post. Will keep an eye out for this show.
Out of interest, has anyone read the books?

I was pleasantly surprised seeing Manu is in this, plus some other people I recognized. I also like that we'll be seeing some fresh faces, too.

I haven't read the books, and judging from some other comments in this post not many have either (from my flist, at least). But it is regarded as a worldwide best-seller, so obviously someone must be aware of the books or will start reading them in preparation for the show.

oooh, I heard of this a while ago, when NK Jemisin was criticizing it for taking part in the unbearable whiteness of fantasy.

I look forward to it for Manu Bennett and the two gals (there are two, I just realized? they look exactly the same) though the main character Will looks...bland. We'll see, I suppose! I'd love for this to be something that fills the Legend of the Seeker-shaped hole in my heart. And hopefully it starts off a trend!

The girls do look awfully similar from what we've seen from the brief moments of them in the trailers, the only way I can tell them apart is by one having braids. But I'm sure as soon as we'll be getting newer content and the show starting we'll have more distinctions between the two. But anyway, I'm definitely in this for not just seeing the world-building, but also for these girls along with Manu (who I was pleasantly surprised to see). Just seeing this world from these trailers is outstanding. I'm a visual person so seeing the shots of the Space Needle and the ship wreckage along with the other locations is just so cool.

I really hope this starts a trend of more fantasy-like fantasy, because as much as I would like ASOIAF to be properly adapted, I want something that is fantastical. LOTS was the last lighthearted fantastical show that was on, and seeing something like this makes me yearn for it.

Ooo that looks really good. I've never read the books. My mom and dad have. They'll probably like it. But I'm definitely going to have to watch it when it airs.
Renéerogueslayer452 on November 7th, 2015 06:57 am (UTC)
I hadn't even heard of the books until recently. Perhaps it's best to go into the show blind and afterwards I'll read the books to compare (I do that anyway with some things that are being adapted that I haven't read yet so I don't go in with any certain expectations).

Ugh yes, can we kill this idea dead already?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this series and hope it doesn't disappoint. I also read that 3 main characters are 2 girls and 1 boy, which makes me happy.

For real, it's so overused. It can work for some things that require it for their universes, but not everything has to go down that darker/grittier route. It is okay to do something lighthearted, or to have an apocalyptic world that is bright and colorful and absolutely gorgeous while still dealing with darker elements. It can be done. We need to bring that back, please.

When I saw that the three main characters were two girls and one guy, I was absolutely pleased, as well. :)

That does look interesting! I am really intrigued by the girl who made it through the gauntlet. And looking forward to having Manu Bennet on my tv again.

I'm intrigued by the story overall and what will be happening. I'm just happy to see the fantasy genre (with elves and dwarves and the like) being on television.

I was pleasantly surprised to seeing Manu, as well! :)

Got to admit, I'm curious! Curious enough that I went ahead and bought the first book, The Sword of Shannara. The only thing I've read by Terry Brooks is his novelization of The Phantom Menace, which was actually quite excellent. No, really. Anyone who can make Episode I look good has actual wizard powers, IMO. So yeah, this looks like it could be really cool. The only question is why no one's done a movie/television series out of Shannara before.

The only question is why no one's done a movie/television series out of Shannara before.

I don't know, could be a number of reasons.

I often wonder why certain books/book series don't often get adapted. There are so many out there that deserve to be recognized, I can name several that I've been wanting to see done as a television series or a movie for a long time. But when you look at some of the failed adaptations of things or things that held much potential and it just failed miserably at maintaining it even for fans, it makes you understand the timing. Sometimes you need the right people at the right time, there's a lot of rights and legal stuff behind the scenes that the creators of these stories need to deal with, etc. It just all depends on circumstances.

This is the first I've heard of it, as well. Reading up on the book series, it does sound quite intriguing. I'm actually curious on how I haven't come across this series even in fandom discussions before. Or perhaps I have and I just wasn't paying attention, lol.

Ooh, awesome! I haven't read the books, but the library has them - or some of them, at least, I'll have to check how many there are in the series and how many the library has - and I have been wanting to borrow them. So will have to get on that, I guess. xD
Renéerogueslayer452 on November 12th, 2015 06:59 am (UTC)
Reading up on what the books are about, I have to say I'm fascinated. It's like a future post-apocalyptic world that has a mixture of magic and science, making it kind of a fusion of fantasy and science fiction. I don't know if I'll have the time to read the first book (among all the other things I'm reading and getting into), but it'll be on my list of things to check out if the show interests me enough to go further.

It's kind of depressing that there isn't any fantasy on television these days, and the only one that is well-known in recent years is Game of Thrones, which definitely isn't for everyone for many reasons. I just want more fun fantasy genres back on my screen again.

Renée: Cara. Warrior.rogueslayer452 on November 11th, 2015 09:32 pm (UTC)
Reading a bit up on the books, and what fans of it have to say, it's quite an interesting series to adapt. It's a hodgepodge of things, a mixture of fantasy and science fiction, strange and dark things happen, etc. I wonder how it'll translate from the source material to a series.
Nadine: Spartacus - Crixusmalicat on November 8th, 2015 05:12 pm (UTC)
I literally know nothing about this book series but a) it has Manu Bennett (and I'd watch ANYTHING for him!) and b) it actually looks really good - especially for a show on MTV - so I'm in!
