STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
Just got back, here is my initial reaction. Warning: spoilers with lots of capslock.

I HAVE BEEN EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED.

IT WAS SO GOOD, BUT MY FEELS ARE EVERYWHERE

REY, MY BEAUTIFUL TINY BADASS BBY (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

FINN, MY BEAUTIFUL BRAVE HUFFLEPUFF BBY (✿◠‿◠)

POE, MY BEAUTIFUL RESISTANCE PILOT BBY (◕‿◕✿)

AND HAN, OH MY HAN. (;__;) AS SOON AS THE CUES WERE HAPPENING (AND IN HINDSIGHT EVEN BEFORE THAT) I KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN, BUT MY HEART STILL HURTS. Like okay, I know it works for the narrative and I know that Harrison Ford was happy with this decision since he apparently wanted Han to die initially in Return of the Jedi, so him dying in The Force Awakens makes sense to move the story along and to continue with the new generation but still keeping with the older one with Leia and Luke still there and other familiar faces. BUT STILL! MY HEART STILL IS LIKE HAN FUCKING SOLO, HE HAS ESCAPED DEATH MANY, MANY TIMES. LIL BBY REY WAS ALL "YOU'RE THE HAN SOLO!" AND LOOKING AT HIM WITH STARRY EYES AND I WANTED THEM TO BE ALL ADVENTURE BUDDIES AND HIM BEING A PATERNAL FIGURE TO HER AND WHATNOT. I WANTED HAN AND LUKE TO BE REUNITED AGAIN, GDI. I WANTED MORE HAN AND LEIA. THE TRIO GANG ALL BACK TOGETHER. I understood why it happened story-wise, especially since it kind of mirrors the whole Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader in A New Hope, and Han probably knew it would be a huge risk and a possible suicide mission anyway, BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN MY HEART ACCEPTS IT AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME OKAY.

I DID GASP WHEN IT WAS REVEALED THAT KYLO-REN WAS HAN AND LEIA'S SON, I ESPECIALLY GASPED OUT LOUD IN THE THEATER WHEN HAN SAID HIS REAL SON'S NAME, "BEN". LIKE! THE CONNECTION! I SEE IT!

BUT KYLO-REN, MAN. JUST WOW. TALK ABOUT A MASSIVE TEMPER TANTRUM. WHAT A BRAT.

REY KICKING HIS ASS THOUGH! I LOVED EVERY MOMENT OF IT. I LOVED EVERY MOMENT WITH REY TO BE HONEST, BUT WHEN SHE STARTED FIGHTING BACK WITH THE FORCE AND LEARNING THE JEDI MIND TRICKS BY HERSELF, OH MAN. AND THAT ENDING WITH HER JUST BEATING HIS ASS, I WAS LIKE YAAASSSSSS!!!

AND NOW I'M ASSUMING THEY ARE SETTING UP FOR REY TO BE A JEDI-IN-TRAINING. WITH LUKE. WHICH I LOVED SEEING THAT MOMENT IN THE END.

AND I BELIEVE THAT REY IS HIS DAUGHTER. LIKE, SERIOUSLY. UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY BELIEVE THIS.

I HAVE OTHER THOUGHTS, BUT THEY'RE ALL JUMBLED UP AT THE MOMENT. NEED MORE TIME TO PROCESS.

BUT GENERALLY FINAL VERDICT: I LOVED IT. I LOVED IT. I FUCKING LOVED IT. BETTER THAN THOSE PREQUELS, LIKE A 10000X. AND REY IS AWESOME AND I LOVE THAT SHE IS BASICALLY THE NEXT LUKE SKYWALKER (PERHAPS MORE WAYS THAN ONE IF MY THEORY IS CORRECT), AND I LOVE THE NEW GENERATION IN GENERAL, AND ALL THE WOMEN PRESENT IN THE FILM WAS SUPER GREAT ON ALL SIDES, AND BB-8 BEING ADORABLE AND ALL THE PRACTICAL EFFECTS AND THE CINEMATOGRAPHY. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE. ♥ ♥ ♥

WASN'T IT JUST SO AWESOME AND AMAZING AND SO MANY FEELS? I WAS FLAILING IN MY SEAT THROUGHOUT AND EVERY TIME AN ORIGINAL CHARACTER APPEARED, I SLAPPED MY BROTHER'S ARM IN EXCITEMENT. I THOUGHT I WOULD BURST.

I knew it was going to happen because so many things in the movie just parallels the sequels, you know? I still cried, literally cried in the theater and trying to wipe away my tears in case people think I'm crazy crying for a fictional character but it hurts to watch and because it's Han Solo. The Han Solo. My brother who was watching with me actually yelled out, "Noooooo!"

I actually guessed that Kylo Ren was either related to Han and Leia or to Luke. And then like you, I jumped that Rey could be related to them as well. Maybe a daughter. I kind of hope so because that would be some serious family rivalry.
Renée: Skye. Transformation.rogueslayer452 on December 22nd, 2015 03:27 am (UTC)
I WAS SO AMAZED BY PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING. LIKE THE NEW CHARACTERS, ALL WERE SO AMAZING AND ACTED SO WELL, AND THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THEM, AND THE ORIGINAL CAST TOO. AND THE CINEMATOGRAPHY?? THE LOCATIONS?? THE SCENERY?? I AM OVERWHELMED BY IT ALL.

I kind of didn't really think about the possibilities of something horrible happening to any of the original characters, at least not initially. Then there were worries about what happened to Luke, and what would happen to Leia or Han. I know that logically not everyone from the original is going to survive in these new films, but as soon as it happened to Han, I felt my heart sink. It's like, you don't expect everything to go perfectly for these characters, but at the same time you want there to be more time with them, y'know? I'm just kind of in a mild state of shock and slight denial, tbqh.

Serious family rivalry is what I want, and now it's even more personal because Kylo Ren killed Han, his father, someone that not only was Luke close with but that Rey (and Finn) connected with as well, so it's all something deeply personal for all of them. I can imagine Luke being hesitant about training Rey with becoming a Jedi because of what happened with Han's son -- but this could be his chance on fixing what went wrong, similar to how Obi-Wan trained Luke to defeat Darth Vader. It of course begs the question whether Kylo Ren can be redeemed....

YES YES YES TO EVERYTHING. EVERY WORD YOU SAID. ALL THE CAPSLOCK.

I almost kind of feel like Han's death hasn't really sunk in for me yet. Like I'm at the "denial" stage or something. THIS CANNOT BE.

Rey is Luke's daughter for sure, I just can't wait to hear how it happened.

AAAAHHH GET ME BACK TO THE THEATER LIKE RIGHT NOW.
Renée: Inara Serra. Smile.rogueslayer452 on December 22nd, 2015 02:11 am (UTC)
I'm slightly in denial too, like I knew it was coming just from the setup of how the sequence of events were happening (and I definitely had a "bad feeling" about it early on but squashed it until the time was nearing), but some part of me is refusing to kind of accept it since it's still too raw for me to properly process. An irrational part of my brain is hoping that he'll pop back up in the next film like, "NOTHING CAN KILL ME, I AM HAN FUCKING SOLO", even though that's absolutely illogical.

Seriously. Like, I can't imagine her not being related to Luke in some fashion. There is definitely a family thing going on, and I'm anxiously waiting for there to be more answers about that.

But honestly, wasn't Rey just so amazing? I love her so much. I love all of the new gang, but Rey immediately captured my heart, like I knew she would after seeing the trailers but seeing how resourceful and awesome she is in the film itself just made me love her even more. ♥

Captain Enkenkanowen on December 22nd, 2015 02:22 am (UTC)
I liked it, didn't love it, but if Rey is not Luke's daughter after that ham-fisted end scene that would never end, I'ma flip a table.

LOL FINN IS A TOTAL HUFFLEPUFF!!!! I never woulda gone there, but you are so right!

Right there with ya on the feels re: Han, and Rey, and EVERYTHING, MAN. I hadn't even thought about the fact that Han and Luke will never be reunited now, and GAH, that SUCKS.

I want to see Episode VIII RIGHT NOW!!!
Renéerogueslayer452 on December 22nd, 2015 03:48 am (UTC)
I was torn on thinking of him as either a Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, but I think Hufflepuff suits him better with his character in the film. :)

I keep wanting to hear a "How'ya doing, kid?" out from him, and the fact we'll never get it breaks my heart even more. Imagine how he'll react to the news about Han being killed, if he doesn't know already? :(

SAME. I NEED THE REST OF THIS TRILOGY NOW!
americana exotica: Claireinterchanges on December 22nd, 2015 05:45 am (UTC)
I love Rey, Finn, and Poe so much!!

It seems so obvious that they're setting up Rey to be Luke's daughter. Which I'm fine with.

I want a BB-8!

Glad we only have to wait 1.5 years for episode 8 instead of 3!
Renée: Kahlan. Smile.rogueslayer452 on December 22nd, 2015 06:41 pm (UTC)
There are definite signs that she is his daughter, or related to him in some fashion. Which I don't mind, obviously, because it means whatever is going to go down in the next two films is going to get very emotional and personal and I honestly cannot wait. And thankfully, we don't have to wait that long before the next one! Yas!

I want BB-8 too! And I love that they actually have functional ones available! Too bad they're expensive as hell, though....
Revyallodole on December 22nd, 2015 09:38 am (UTC)
I had spoiled it before that Kylo was their kid but it was still a lot of "D::::" on my part because oh Han you dumbo and can i just say how much I loved how Han and Leia were together. They were THE otp in the old ones and now they were old and gone their separate ways but the spark was still there and I'm like
you can't beat that. You just can't. Han/Leia forever. ;____; I wanted Han and Luke to reunite again.

I love that it was so clear that Kylo Ren was obsessed with his grandfather, mimicking his movements and outfit but he's so young and foolish and desperate and such a brat and he just isn't there.

I loved Finn vs Kylo but I loved Rey vs Kylo because ahhhh. How fucking pretty was everything though?? Snow and the forest and the whoom whoom of light sabers and their more or less swift movements and the planet just falling apart under their feet. Gooood.

Poe was criminally underused, I loved how he was instantly bffs with Finn.

BB-8 was the highlight of the entire movie, everyone kept laughing at it and awwwing at it.

I CAN'T FUCKING BELIEVE THEY KILLED HAN FUCKING SOLO. HAN SOLO. ;________________;

I know some people are sad that they didn't get enough time together, but the spark and chemistry between Han and Leia was still there. After all these years, still there, and it was so great. And the fact that Luke and Han will never reunite, it just breaks my heart into a thousand pieces. :(

I love that it was so clear that Kylo Ren was obsessed with his grandfather, mimicking his movements and outfit but he's so young and foolish and desperate and such a brat and he just isn't there.

Exactly. They highlighted this certain displacement with his childish outbursts and temper tantrums, him being torn with not being "good enough" like how Darth Vader was (while completely missing the point at the same time) thus fueling his obsession with "finishing what he started", and still feeling the pull of his good side and that particular inner conflict, which he thought he could kill by killing his father. It makes you wonder whether he is a chance at being redeemed or not.

How fucking pretty was everything though?? Snow and the forest and the whoom whoom of light sabers and their more or less swift movements and the planet just falling apart under their feet. Gooood.

Everything about the locations and scenery during certain scenes were so beautiful. I love that they took advantage of using such gorgeous places to film particular moments, like the fighting scene in the snow. It was so pretty and awesome and, ah! ♥

I hope Poe gets more screentime in the next two films. His instant friendship with Finn was adorable. I loved that he gave Finn his name and was complimenting him as Finn was learning how to fire and everything. And then when they reunited, all the hugs and happiness. I really want Finn, Poe and Rey to be in the same room with each other, bonding and whatnot. These cute kids, just protect them universe, okay?

BB-8 was too adorable, omg. ♥

I CAN'T FUCKING BELIEVE THEY KILLED HAN FUCKING SOLO. HAN SOLO. ;________________;

I HAVE SO MUCH CAPSLOCK ABOUT THIS MOVIE TOO and just, yes, and also yes, and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah yeah oh my god there was so much joy. LUKE SKYWALKER IS NOW A GIRL AND ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD.
Renée: Elena Gilbert. Magic.rogueslayer452 on December 22nd, 2015 06:24 pm (UTC)
I love that they did this. We already had the hero story with Luke, we had the failed story of Anakin, and now with the new generation we have a girl hero who will most likely train alongside Luke and defeat the new Big Bad of this new trilogy and save the universe with the help of her friends AND I AM LOVING THIS SO MUCH. GIMME ALL OF IT PLS. PUT HER ON ALL THE MERCHANDISING. I WANT THE SHIRTS AND TOYS AND EVERYTHING. OMG IMAGINE ALL THE LITTLE GIRLS SEEING THIS FILM AND WANTING TO BE REY? AHHH THIS IS AMAZING! (✿◠‿◠)

I'm actually pretty happy that everyone seemed so shippable of the new trio. I just love their chemistry, Finn and Poe, Finn and Rey, now all we need is for Rey and Poe to finally meet in future films. :D

I have so much feels right now... Loved the movie sooo much...

Me too. First I thought that she'd be Han's and Leia's daughter, but now I think she's really somehow related to Luke. Ahhh... loved the last scene.

Renée: Agents of Shield. Skye.rogueslayer452 on December 22nd, 2015 05:15 pm (UTC)
She's definitely a Skywalker, for sure. Like, there were meaningful cues and moments that kind of link the two of them together. The most notable ones are when she uses the Force to get Luke's lightsaber during her confrontation with Kylo Ren, they used Luke's theme. Granted it is his lightsaber, but still! And of course that last scene with them together. Just, ah!

I want the next two films now, please!
Christina: p&r- la- more hugsssfly_meaway on December 22nd, 2015 08:31 pm (UTC)
I'm soooo with you on believing that Rey is Luke's daughter. I stand by that as well until we're actually told otherwise. And basically all of your thoughts were my thoughts and I agree so much. All the new characters were awesome and Rey was so badass and awesome and real and just. Yeah. I loved it sooo much too. So I'm glad you did though :D

And reading your thoughts just made me happy to be honest ;)
Renée: Firefly. Inara Serra.rogueslayer452 on December 23rd, 2015 03:41 pm (UTC)
At this point, if she isn't there has to be a really good explanation why not, because right now all signs point to that she's his daughter.

And of course people are wondering why he would leave her behind, but in all honesty, perhaps he didn't know. Maybe whoever the mother was didn't tell him, and was going to tell him, but then she was taken away and Rey was left behind on that planet, waiting for her mother, her only family she knew, to return for her. I don't know, I'm just theorizing but I wholeheartedly believe that they are related, and that Kylo Ren is her cousin and it's going to be one huge family affair. As it kind of always is, in some form or another.

And awww, thank you so much bby. :)

So good.

I saw Han's death coming, but it still hurt my heart.

I figured he was their son, and I like your theory on Rey.

Rey was perfect.
Renée: Firefly. River Tam.rogueslayer452 on December 23rd, 2015 03:01 am (UTC)
I think a lot of people could see it coming once certain things were set in motion in the film, but it doesn't hurt any less once it has happened. The denial is strong with this one! D:

I love that Rey is basically the equivalent of Luke in the original trilogy, the one where everything is going to be centered around and her training to become a Jedi. Like, I'm so happy about it all. I love Finn and Poe, obviously, but Rey. ♥
verdande_miverdande_mi on December 23rd, 2015 11:53 am (UTC)
My feels are still all over place still :D

Rey was indeed wonderful, and her fight with Kylo-Ren was a highlight for me, nothing I did not like about it!
Renée: Arrow. Sara Lance.rogueslayer452 on December 23rd, 2015 03:45 pm (UTC)
I loved that fight, it was so wonderful, especially when she was learning rather quickly how to use the Force in that moment to help defeat him. At least disarm him before getting separated from each other so she could help Finn. You could see that strength and power inside of her, even more than before, and it was beautiful. And my other favorite moment was when he was interrogating her and expecting to get what he wanted from inside her head, but she surprised him by managing to get inside his. I think even she surprised herself in that moment. But I loved that she was a fast learner in knowing the Jedi mind trick, that was smart and awesome.

I just really love Rey, okay? She is my girl. ♥
an idea is bulletproofelizalavelle on December 23rd, 2015 03:27 pm (UTC)
With Han I don't think he could have lived and had the movies really progress. He's always going to be the hero and if he was around the new trio wouldn't get the spotlight in the same way.

It's a sad death but it really fit with the story for me and didn't seem like something that was just thrown in there.

If Rey isn't Luke's daughter I'm going to need some very good explanations for her visions when she first touched the lightsaber.

I can't wait for the next one and I'm off to see this one again next week :)
Renéerogueslayer452 on December 23rd, 2015 04:19 pm (UTC)
Personally, I think they could have coexisted with each other just fine without any spotlight being taken from them, considering this film I was pleased by the return of the original cast and the new generation, but I think it does make sense in the narrative to have one of the older generation go as a kind of push for the new characters. It definitely pushed Finn and Rey for their final confrontation with Kylo Ren, especially for Rey to kind of continue on with her journey.

So his death wasn't thrown in there at random. There was a reason for it to happen, even if my heart still hurts from it.

If Rey isn't Luke's daughter I'm going to need some very good explanations for her visions when she first touched the lightsaber.

omg, same.
