March Question Meme: Day Thirteen
Asked by ragnarok_08:

Favorite childhood shows?

This depends on what you mean by childhood, because there are at least three categories.

Actual Childhood (10-years-old and younger)

I essentially was raised on Disney Channel, so there are a lot of memories associated with 80s and 90s Disney and the wide variety of programs they used to have, which sadly doesn't exist anymore. My favorite shows would mostly consist of My Little Pony, Care Bears, Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, Under The Umbrella Tree, Ocean Girl, Flash Forward, The Torkelsons, The Baby-Sitter's Club, Brotherly Love, among many other things they used to show, including the Disney Afternoon shows like Gargoyles, DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers and all of those.

We also watched PBS, with such shows like Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, Wishbone, Ghostwriter and Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? being among my favorites. And then FOX Kids had Goosebumps, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Eerie, Indiana. We also saw bits and pieces of other family sitcoms from other channels, like Full House and Family Matters.

We also watched Babar, but that was exclusively on HBO, which we didn't have, so we had to get family friends to videotape the episodes so we could watch it back home.

Pre-Teen Years

While I still watched Disney Channel from time to time, I did venture onto other things. This was the start of my discovery of more shows on other networks, this included catching up on reruns of Saved By The Bell and California Dreams after school. But it was during the transition from sixth grade to junior high where I discovered Nickelodeon, first with Clarissa Explains It All, then with All That, Kenan and Kel and Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, and it just went on from there. It's where I ended up becoming obsessed with the shows from that era, including the Animorphs television series which, while understandably many book fans weren't pleased with, but I didn't care because I liked the cast (and the fact that both Shawn Ashmore and his twin brother, Aaron Ashmore, have become quite successful today is quite impressive, as I'll always remember Shawn Ashmore as Jake, and then later as Tyler from Disney Channel's In A Heartbeat).

Teenage Years and onward....

Around my pre-teen years I also discovered Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed, which of course BTVS became the biggest show for me for many different reasons. I came into the show during its third season and was obsessed with it, and it became my biggest fandom for the longest time. Charmed I got invested in because I loved The Craft and anything associated with magic/witchcraft I got into, though I stopped watching for reasons I can't remember. Nevertheless, this is around the time I got into many WB shows, including Dawson's Creek, Roswell, Sister Sister, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and so much more, which has led to much of my television and fandom obsessions to this day.

I sometimes forget how many shows I have watched throughout my life until it's basically all written out, and even then I know there's still a lot more that I'm forgetting.

Animorphs! ♥
I... didn't really watch much TV til late high school years. Or movies. Animorphs is probably the exception to that.

Animorphs was a great YA science fiction series, and despite how the show didn't follow the books and was low-budget I still loved it nonetheless. I do wonder if there will be an attempt to adapt it again, whether as a series or on the big screen.

It's kind of amazing when you look through all what you watched when you were younger and you get hit with all the nostalgia feels. ♥

Babar was really lovely. They've remade it now with computers and it's really lost its charm!

Aw, really? Well that sucks. :/

Babar was one of those childhood things that unless someone mentions it, people can't recall it. I loved the show, but I also loved Babar: The Movie, which is another childhood things I rewatched over and over again.

I don't think I ever saw the movie!

OMG, really? You totally should if you ever get the chance to, it's absolutely great. Will definitely get you right in the nostalgia feels, for sure. :)

Gargoyles was awesome! <3

It was so ahead of its time. Looking back, it had some pretty profound messages and storylines intertwined with the whole story, and of course I loved the darker tone the show had versus the other cartoons Disney had at the time. It was a bold move, and I'm happy that it is still so beloved. ♥

Oh my goodness, so much nostalgia :DDD

I remember watching most of those shows you mentioned, especially Disney Afternoon, PBS, and BTVS - good times...

Thank you for answering my question *^^*

omg I loved The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh! I had a bunch of the tapes that I would watch when I was younger.

This post makes me so nostalgic lol.

Same here! We still have them, too. I would rewatch them over and over ad nauseum, like with most things in my childhood, lol. But Winnie the Pooh in general is widely loved in our family.

Oh Disney Afternoons...I used to watch those, but I preferred the WB cartoons like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs.
Renéerogueslayer452 on March 15th, 2016 02:22 pm (UTC)
I have to admit, while I knew of them, I never watched those shows. I probably saw a few episodes of Animaniacs here and there, but I'll be damned if I remember anything about it.

I was the opposite of you, I watched Nickelodeon as a kid and didn't get into Disney Channel until I was tween (because it wasn't part of the regular cable package until then). I loved Animorphs as well!
Renée: Elena Gilbert. Magic.rogueslayer452 on March 15th, 2016 02:20 pm (UTC)
Yay, more Animorphs fans! :D

(I know that it's a beloved series, but not many people talk about it among fandom circles these days, and the show is virtually nonexistent to book fans, sadly enough. Yes it was low-budget cheese, but I loved it, so I'm happy whenever someone else shares the love for it as well, faults and all.)

OCEAN GIRLLLLLL. I want Neri to be, like, my best friend.

And Gargoyles still rocks.

I want to be her best friend, but I also want to be her. She basically taught me the "proper" way to swim, so whenever I'm swimming I pretend that I'm in the ocean just like she is. (◕‿◕✿)

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh was great! I used to own so many of those on VHS. And Power Rangers was def my favorite as a kid.
Renéerogueslayer452 on March 17th, 2016 08:45 am (UTC)
Yeah, same. We would record them so we have like multiple VHS tapes (still!) of all the aired episodes so I could rewatch them back-to-back.

There was another show somewhat similar to Power Rangers called Big Bad Beetleborgs which wasn't as popular I don't think, and definitely wasn't as good, but I used to watch some episodes with my cousins when we went to visit them.
