They thought he was going to be Darth Vader 2.0 and instantly become popular, when in actuality Darth Vader himself didn't even get popular until much later in the original trilogy when he became iconic rather than a one-dimensional bad guy. Also, why would they think children would identify with Kylo Ren when he killed his own father, y'know, Han freaking Solo a.k.a. a most beloved character? It's so ridiculous. Then again, I don't think they thought anything beyond, "hey he looks cool and is the new villain let's have him be the most marketable character before the movie premieres to increase sales." When in reality, nobody wants Kylo Ren but more of Rey and Finn.

It's still unbelievable that they initially left Rey out from a lot of the merchandising though, with weak excuses like "omg but spoilers." At least they've rectified this mistake.

I know that there is talk about including a LGBT character in the new Star Wars trilogy, whether or not it's Poe or Finn/Poe or someone else, I'm all for it (just as long as they survive, of course, that's all that matters).
