Rec: Fanvids of 2020

As 2020 is coming to a close, I wanted to share some of my favorite fanvids that I discovered and watched over the course of this year. There's been a lot of fanvids that float around out there from a variety of my fandoms and I like a lot of them, but there's a handful that I find stand out among the others, usually in terms of style of editing and the way it flows narratively. I personally prefer ones that have a goal of telling a story through selective scenes and that matches the chosen song used.

Daisy Johnson | What We're Fighting For by SunnyVids
Character / Fandom: Daisy Johnson, Agents of SHIELD
Personal Commentary: This is probably one of my favorite fanvids I discovered this year, not only since it focuses on one of my favorite characters but because the vidder put in a lot of effort to create it since it's an entire character study piece of Daisy's character throughout the entirety of the show, and a way of them to celebrate and say goodbye as Agents of SHIELD came to its end. The editing is spot-on, especially when it combines many scenes that match each other throughout the seasons, showing the continuity and the growth and development that Daisy herself went through, her journey from the beginning of the series to the end. It's incredibly beautiful and it demonstrates precisely why I love Daisy so much. This must've been one hell of a project to complete, and I applaud them for doing so.

Daisy Johnson || Legends Never Die by Alessandro
Character / Fandom: Daisy Johnson, Agents of SHIELD
Personal Commentary: I really love this video, the song choice is quite fitting for Daisy and I enjoyed the way they incorporated a lot of her most amazing scenes of her kicking ass and taking names and showing that, even when she's knocked down she still gets right back up. Spoilers through all seven seasons.

Crazy Jane || "Do you ever feel like your life is spiraling out of control?" by WelcomeToCaritas
Character / Fandom: Crazy Jane, Doom Patrol
Personal Commentary: Set to one of my absolute favorite songs by Halsey, "Control", this vid is a character study of Jane in Doom Patrol, being the Primary of the many personas of Kay Challis, and how she is trying her hardest to navigate through everything despite the PTSD and hurt that comes along with protecting the girl. It does feature other personas too, but it mainly focuses on Jane and how she, being Primary, has to be in control while on the surface rather than having control over the other personas ("They're not my people. I don't control them. I respect them and their right to exist."), and what it means in the long run.

Drummer and Ashford | Life as a Belter by Zurik 23M
Character / Fandom: Camina Drummer and Klaes Ashford, The Expanse
Personal Commentary: This is such a beautiful video that explores the friendship between Drummer and Ashford, it started out strained but it blossomed into them becoming equals and comrades, sharing their views on what it is to be a Belter and their wishes for the future of the Belt. Excellent music, amazing scene and dialogue choices, amazing all around. Major spoilers for S4.

Jessica Jones || Not A Hero by pornado
Character / Fandom: Jessica Jones, Jessica Jones
Personal Commentary: This is an emotional video examining Jessica Jones and her inability to view herself as a hero due to her guilt, her PTSD, and her insecurities and most of all because she doesn't think herself as worthy because of all the fucked up bullshit that has happened in her life. It's also about her trying, in spite of it all, to try and become a better person, to be okay, even when the entire world seems to be against her. This mostly only goes up to the second season, but the clips combined with the swelling of the music, really got to me the first time I watched it. Fantastic, and a great study of Jessica's character and her mental state with everything she'd gone through in those two seasons.

Our Love | Xicheng by Fair Rye
Character / Fandom: Jiang Cheng/Lan Xichen, The Untamed
Personal Commentary: I just can't not feature one of my favorite pairings from this fandom. I've been adoring a lot of the fan content featuring the ship for Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen, and this fanvid is really fantastic, from the editing, the voiceovers from different medias making quoting references to love which add to the experience. The vidder really did a great job with having a kind of narrative here with that, further demonstrating the longing. The video does feature captions for the chosen dialogue parts, so turn those on when watching.

Xue Yang & Xiao Xingchen | hold on by wonugyu
Character / Fandom: Xue Yang/Xiao Xingchen, The Untamed
Personal Commentary: This is another one of my favorite pairings from The Untamed, and it's all sorts of tragic. I personally really love the dialogue choices used for this (click on the closed captions for it to be effective) and it makes my heart hurt all over again, especially the ending because, yeah. This does feature major spoilers for the Yi City arc that happens, which is their arc in the series, in case you want to remained unspoiled if you haven't yet watched the show.

Xue Yang & Xiao Xingchen || time to die by lady disaster
Character / Fandom: Xue Yang/Xiao Xingchen, The Untamed
Personal Commentary: Similar to the one above, this really highlights the relationship between Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen during the Yi City arc, with a more solemn song used. Again, click on the closed captioned for the dialogue sprinkled throughout, and of course there are spoilers for the arc. But I personally really love this one because of the heartbreaking song that matches them perfectly, but especially for Xue Yang.
